A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Exeter traders slam ‘crazy’ plans to build on city centre car park

The car is still king and there is nothing they can do about it, say baffled visitors to the city

Save the scruffy car park! There’s several little gems in this fairly long read, but my favourite is Mr Car is King: “Always has been. People need their independence. To get rid of the parking spaces and tell people to use the bus is absurd because the buses are atrocious.”

It’s called initiative something the majority of cyclists don’t have.”

I think initiative would be finding an alternative legal route…

Ah, to be stood there with an oaken staff, crying out, “You shall not pass!”

Tonbridge woman fined £100 by One Parking Solution while dropping off clothes to Mind charity

The housewife, who lives in Chiddingstone Causeway village near Tonbridge, was visiting the town’s high street store, to deliver some her mother-in-law’s clothes after she passed away.

After speaking to the manager Mel, Alana was told to park round the back of the shop to drop off the clothes.

“Mel is having a word with head office as I’m aware I’m not the only person this has happened to.”

Where did park when speaking to Mel? Anyway, the scene of the crime:

I’m sure there will be police

I’m sure there will be police crime numbers matching the instances of abuse, etc that are alleged.
Maybe times have changed, but I thought pupils/clients who are vulnerable/might struggle with a journey had an escort, rather be left with Cabbie McCabface.  Taxis hired for this purpose should be granted the same access as other public transport. We’re talking very small numbers.

A strategic withdrawal, I hope, rather than a sign that the whole line is collapsing.

In Casino, Robert de Niro keeps the establishment open by every 6 months amending his casino licence application to the council in some trivial and bogus way e.g. the applicant’s job title – apparently, that reset the application back to the beginning and in the meantime, you trade.  Just thinking that this rebases the 18 month trial.

    Wow – shouldn’t be surprised

Wow – shouldn’t be surprised but … taxi drivers.

“”It has been absolutely horrific since the scheme was introduced. We told the council we would be looking at revoking services in the scheme areas if we did not receive a response from them  …  Our concerns were around the safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children who use our services and are not able to access them anymore.” [ what? ] “…traffic is being forced onto two main roads.” [ er… so it’s sort of stopping rat-running then? ] “Although we welcome the new access we have been granted, our main goal is to have the scheme scrapped.

And ” essential provider of public transport ” [ we had this debate though ]

And the council having backed down: “some people are having with their taxi journeys and parents of young people with disabilities, for example, have said that they’re finding the extra time in the taxi stressful for their child and costly.”

We can’t reduce traffic because the disabled. (Or rather, because everyone else demands their share first…) It’s a version  of selective concern.

If no one does anything nothing gets done.  Changes to behaviour rarely occur without appropriate motivation – whether that comes via a carrot, or a stick.
