A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Hereford bypass plan: major update
“Vehicles travelling north to south through the county mostly go through Hereford to cross the river,” says the council.
“Creating another road bridge across the river Wye will reduce reliance on Greyfriars Bridge and the A49 through the city, improving journey times and improving resilience of the network.”

This is a link to a Look at Life feature: at 6′ and 7′ it features Markyate and Stilton, both villages with a major road route previously passing through and now newly by-passed. The place goes really quiet – for a little while, anyway. Funny how we’re still chasing that idea decades later.

The proposals also call for charging at Kilkenny Fields and the lake grounds by the cricket club. The Post Office in Portishead – which is not a small town, by any means – was closed last year. Anyone now wanting to use a Post Office has to go the nearest one, in Pill, four miles away. And very few of those people use the bus to do so…

Avon and Somerset Police catch 81 drivers using phones

Police spotted 81 motorists using phones illegally during a two-week operation.Avon and Somerset Police took part in national campaign Operation Telecom, raising awareness of the dangers of driving while distracted.
The incidents were “significantly higher” than the same period last year, when 49 offences were recorded.
81 seems very low (and 49 is just silly). Were the police even paying attention?

That pesky word “choice” popping up again.
Fears new parking charges could have ‘real impact’ on residents and businesses across North Somerset
A seven-week consultation is now underway
Portishead West councillor Nicola Holland said: “The consultation states that the charges will encourage greater use of alternatives to the car – well what choice exactly?
If you live in some parts of my ward, a walk into town can be up to 40 minutes or more and with bus services recently cut from our end of town public transport is non-existent.
Until there is proper infrastructure people have no alternative but to use the car.”

Looks like that car can be had with 16″, 17″, or 18″ wheels. Any bets on what she has? If she’d chosen the 215/65R16 size, she’d have spent less money, got a smoother ride, better fuel economy, and probably wouldn’t have a damaged wheel. But then it wouldn’t look as silly.
Looking at the photos of the alleged damage to her wheels… If she is that concerned about a small scratch to her alloys then she probably ought to leave that Qashqai at home.

There are a number of legal
There are a number of legal terms and defining what the car park is will ultimately define whether a traffic offence has been committed.
The car park, although private land, is open and accessible to the public by motor vehicle, and is defined as a “public space accessible by road”. Not sure whether that actually counts as a road in and of itself. Some public car parks (on private land) will be managed by private firms who may apply such rules as a byelaw. This will typically be listed on the car park use T’s and C’s (singposted at regular intervals)

Is this one of those offences where an unduly lenient sentence can be appealed? Maybe tweet him back? I thought this was pretty bloody lenient, especially when I saw some hapless, likely trafficked bloke get five years for tending a cannabis farm. Not exactly a victimless crime but hardly on the same scale of offending as this nutcase driver.
