A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Bus driver who killed two
Bus driver who killed two women after accelerating instead of braking spared jail
Bus driver who killed two women after accelerating instead of braking spared jail
Baruania Baros, 35, was trying to manoeuvre his vehicle to deploy a ramp to let a disabled passenger off at the busy Piccadilly bus station in central Manchester around 9.25pm on July 10, 2022.But in an ‘unfortunate lapse of concentration’ he left it in gear causing it to lurch forward before mistakenly pressing the accelerator instead of the brake.
The bus mounted the pavement and crashed into the bus shelter where Joyce Bacon, 60 and Adele Boylin, 55, were standing.
…
Baros, from Ashton-under-Lyne, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by careless driving sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years.
‘This was a fatal mistake on your part,’ Judge Suzanne Goddard KC told him, describing the incident as a ‘tragic accident’.
It’s to do with a driver and his problem, so I figured I’d put in on here

Nine out of ten councils do not plan to increase parking bay sizes
Cars are getting bigger and bigger, but Autocar research has revealed that fewer than 1-in-10 UK councils (8.2%) have plans to increase the size of their parking bays https://t.co/eXgp0EGM7J pic.twitter.com/OV79oDA96X
— Autocar (@autocar) May 2, 2024
Standard off-street parking bays measure 2.40 metres wide by 4.80 metres long, and seven out of the top 10 best-selling car brands in the UK last year produce cars that exceed this length.
To make matters worse, five UK councils already impose maximum length restrictions on vehicles, putting the drivers of many big-selling models at risk of receiving fines when using council-run facilities.

Castle Fields car park
Castle Fields car park extension in Tonbridge abandoned but charges remain on Sundays and Martin Square in Larkfield and Bailey Bridge in Aylesford
A blow-by-blow account of a Council meeting here. The privilege of car ownership results in people saying the strangest things.
Kay Sinclair told the cabinet that 27 businesses had hosted the petition because they were all concerned about the adverse effect the extra charges would have on custom.
She said the charges would “devastate the High Street and be the death of the community.”
Graham Simmonds told the council that by ignoring the strong public opposition to the charges, the council was giving the impression that it didn’t care about its voters and that “democracy was dead.”

I thought it amusing that there was a car parked in the opening when Google passed. Anyway, I refer you to the official list of Driver Free Passes (extract reproduced below for ease of reference).

So according to the caption on the picture, the vehicle that got ticketed was parking illegally and so was correctly ticketed?

Local papers is a bit of a misnomer: most of them don’t even have local offices eg IIRC there’s one desk which covers everything south of Birmingham down to Lands End.

Road closure in Watlington
Road closure in Watlington will create 10-mile diversion
People in a Norfolk village will be forced on a 10-mile diversion through three neighbouring villages just to get to the shop, doctor’s office and playground this week.
Edward Travers, 41, who lives in Watlington, is angered by the extent of the disruption. “This will affect more than half of the village’s residents,” he said. “It has not been thought through properly.
“People living on the train station side will have to take a 10-mile diversion to get to the A10 which will add about another 15 minutes just to go what is effectively only two miles away.
“It will also affect the school busses as they start their run from the station but they won’t be able to pick up children from the other side of the closure and get them to school on time.”

10 miles diversion, you say? Well, challenge accepted. The official diversion into the village comes out as 7.5 miles on my mapping app.
From the farthest flung (westerly) end of Station Road into the centre of the Watlington is 1.2 miles, tops. Not sure the One.Network is accurately showing the extent of the road closure, so I’ve hazarded a guess in red and let’s assume no-one is allowed though by any travel means.
With a little ingenuity, there’s a cycling/ walking route (blue) through the houses to the north of Station Road for what looks to be the village centre, and plenty of options to the south for the medical centre and school.
Or it could it be Edward is whingeing because he’ll have to tackle some wriggley unclassified roads to get to the A10 just to the east of the village?
