A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Free parking at Somerset car
Free parking at Somerset car parks to end in controversial plans
Controversial plans being put to the public
At a council scrutiny panel in March, Shaun Hughes (Midsomer Norton North, Independent) said that Midsomer Norton did not have the same air quality problem as Bath. He added: “In Midsomer Norton, a lot of our residents can’t afford an electric car. They can’t afford the latest fuel efficient vehicles. Some of them have to drive a 20-year-old diesel Astra.
“They don’t want to; that’s what they have to drive to be able to get around to do their job — and you’re penalising them.”
Ms Rigby said: “A lot of people who are very low income have no vehicle whatsoever and they are breathing in other people’s pollution. I think it’s fair that we protect those people as well.”

PS I took the BANES parking charges survey – they seemed to assume you were a driver – actually they’re some way down the list, as they are with 20 mph consultations. I did wonder whether the system would prevent me from taking it repeatedly – drivers are obsessed enough to do this as I suspect has happened with Poole Park and 20 mph in Southampton. Then you never hear the last of it, of course.

[I]I witnessed something that I would consider extremely rude from a traffic warden patrolling New Milton high street.
[I]An elderly couple double parked outside Oxfam bookshop to drop off some thing, and before the gentleman had got to the boot of his car, a traffic warden ran over and started writing a ticket. The lady pointed out to the traffic warden that her husband was dropping some charity bags into the charity shop. The traffic warden’s response to this was: “I don’t care, you’re getting a ticket.”
[I]Surely a better response would’ve been ‘I’m very sorry madam but you’re not allowed to park here, you will need to find a parking space somewhere else and carry your bags to the charity shop’. I went and helped the gentleman unload his bags and politely told the warden I thought his response wasn’t very nice, and that he could have asked them to move on rather than just issue a ticket, his response was: “I don’t care.”
[I]I finished my shopping on the high street and when I got back to the car, the warden was still hanging around. I told him was still disappointed with his response, and the warden switched on his body cam and aggressively came over to me and started questioning me.
[I]Don’t get me wrong, I know traffic wardens have a vital part to play in keeping the flow of traffic on our high street and they do a very valuable job.
[I]But I do feel that sometimes they can be overzealous, and perhaps some public-facing retraining would be appropriate.

TBF underwater search is incredibly challenging, and IIRC part of this river was tidal. Things can get moved around at random times.Having said that, while this dude was presumably motivated by trying to help he didn’t seem shy of airtime. There also seemed to be an extraordinary number of people inserting themselves into the story. And ultimately the initial police theory turned out to be correct (seems odd to defendLancs police! ).

‘Surely every driver that parks on a kerb in Southampton can expect the same letter as I received?’If only.
We were quoted £5000 to drop our kerb so we decided not to do it. Our neighbours on the corner built a driveway without planning permission and use the pedestrian dropped kerb to drive onto their driveway. The council don’t care.

IIRC didn’t the same guy try to get involved in the search for that British teenager who disappeared on Tenerife?

Sadly, many people think LancsFilth are embarrassed by ‘this sort of thing’. They’re not. They have survived many years of a policy of completely ignoring road traffic offences, they survived the Nicola Bulley debacle, etc. and they have (or, possibly, had) a compliant and useless PCC and very low expectations from a public which is also anti-cyclist.

Its actually a benefit for them and not a problem but some drivers will see it that way (a problem) Speed Limiters (ISA). Whislt it legally is only applicable to cars sold in the EU, its believed that manufactures are unlikely to make derestricted cars specifically for the UK. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/103530/speed-limiters-now-required-all-new-cars-know-rules-and-how-they-work

Just wait ’till they learn about the motorised transport used to drive the cannon fodder to the front lines, or that police are enthusiastic users of black marias for carrying off uppity working class union members… or the machiavellian tactic of making driving aspirational, then allowing people to take overtime to save up to buy a vehicle to get into work sooner.
