A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

I read an article on the case.
The police got CCTV from a farm and found nearly all drivers going at 20-25 mph due to ice and this bloke was doing 87 according to his car’s data.
Should not be allowed to drive again.

An unusual one in that a) there was a prosecution b) and for dangerous driving c) AND it succeeded (and led to imprisonment).

She’s quite right though in how speeding is normalised and minimised. (It’s all “meh” below multiples of the speed limit).

Roadworks halted for massive event to swerve traffic chaos

The works have been called an ‘absolute nightmare’

so if I have this right, you’re worried about traffic congestion associated with this event and you want people to use park and ride, but also all the municipal car parks are going to be free of charge?

Communities in Fareham are being “blighted” by dangerous driving and speeding, which is leaving “elderly residents frightened” to go out after dark.

I like the way the headline blames the bridge.

Remarkably a driver is mentioned – but only further down the article and to reassure that he and the other adults were also OK…

Ah, that makes sense. I thought I had just cut and pasted, but “phones” so …

The bit about having hauled a door and pipes for central heating in what was even at the time a modest family car is as true as my memory from decades back. My parents definitely shifted a lot of stuff, and we very rarely used a van for it.
But “progress” and “most people do what everyone else is doing”, so that’s irrelevant I suppose ?‍♂️

Ah yes, no option other than using a 2.5 tonne Land Rover to carry [checks notes] 90cm of pipe.

Edited – to be fair, the bloke actually said “a three-metre length of pipe”. But I’m keeping the pic.

Edited again – from the comments on the BBC story, it looks like maybe Chris correctly quoted the article as it stood this morning, in which the BBC had incorrectly quoted the guy as saying “three foot”! They’ve now changed it to metres. Still keeping the pic.

It’s not the size of the occupants that matters (three adults can squeeze in) but the size of the seat the child is legally required to have. Though why you would want three anyway I can’t fathom.

I hear from some that it is not possible to fit three (mandatory until c.12) child seats in many smaller cars, so I have some sympathy with that.

I know! I hope eg. “You and yours” will be covering this and the issue that people are simply not being informed that children do not stay the size of babies but get bigger over time, which can force people to buy bigger cars. What is the government doing about this?
