How far do you commute to work (by bike)?

OK, you have to do this regularly, it doesn’t count if you have cycled to work once or cycled past your work on a weekend jaunt plus you have to cycle back the same day to where you started from. Also it has to be current, not ‘back in the day’. It will be interesting to see if some of us cover the same route but have never met.

    20km inbound, usually a bit
20km inbound, usually a bit more on the return leg, 3 or 4 times a week at this time of year. But it is from one small market town to another so mainly (very) rural. Chapeau to you urban lads and lasses I couldn’t hack that anymore.

11 miles in and 18 miles
11 miles in and 18 miles home. I ride every working day unless I’m off-site.

In the summer, on Fridays I try to get the home run up to 20 miles plus đŸ™‚

Here’s what I used to do when
Here’s what I used to do when I had a long commute.

Have a shower before I left for work, and always rode in wearing clean kit – stale sweat is what smells. Then when I got there I washed as much of the sweat off as I could and waited until I had cooled down and stopped sweating (10 mins or so) before I got changed – on hot days giving myself a bit more of a splash with water and deoderant, kept at work for the purpose. Sounds a ffaf but actually it was easy. I suppose if you worked somewhere that you had to be suited and booted from the off you might want to go in early enough to cool down and change before the working day officially began.

What do you guys do about
What do you guys do about showers? I’ve just moved house to Chorley so my new commute will be 16.5 miles, so i’m going have to practise longer rides before I can do that. Do you guys have showers at your work? I’m starting a placement year at a company in Manchester tomorrow but i’m not sure if they do and I don’t want to sit in an office smelling of a 16 mile bike commute lol.

I ride every weekday 5 miles
I ride every weekday 5 miles each way on probably the flattest route in Cornwall, either fixed on a 1983 Raleigh Record Sprint (52/20) or fixed on a Genesis Day One Cross (42/17) if the weather is dodgy as has full mud guards, more relaxed geometry etc. Worse thing is the windy, how can it be a head wind riding in then a head wind riding back? Wind sucks!!

8.5 miles each way from West
8.5 miles each way from West London to EC2. Lovely part through Hyde Park, not so much fun through the City.

I do tend to chicken out if it’s raining though. Can’t stand cycling in the rain and am therefore obviously in the wrong country… lol

5 miles each way on A650
5 miles each way on A650 between Wakefield & Bradford. Fairly steady uphill to work and downhill on way home. Sometimes vary route home to take in some hills and extra distance but haven’t once managed to motivate myself to extend the route in to work despite many promises.

recognise a couple of sames faces once or twice a week but only in opposite direction. Fitness def improved when first started (3 years back) but plateaud months ago and no lighter now than when i started!
