Just had my first look at the route and details of the race.

Looks like there is a big change in the points competition this year. Some stage have 5 intermediate sprints, some have only one and a lot of the intermediate sprints are half way up a climb. There is one on the flat 2km from the start of a mountain stage.

I have no idea how points are going to be awarded, I can’t find a copy of the rules anywhere but it looks like they are trying to create a more competitive competition, which can be won by sprinters, climbers, puncheurs or breakers. Dr Winston should like this.

Interestingly the most competitive rider is chosen by the public via social media.

    I have 33 transfers left. I’m

I have 33 transfers left. I’m definitely taking out Chaves, but the stage is really hard to call. I might make a couple to see how it goes.

And I did screw up BinckBank, and the Tour, pretty badly. I’m going for a more prudent approach this time.

Given that you have a 48 point lead you should be able to stay ahead for a while, unless you manage to completely screw up like you did in Binck Bank.yes

Oooooh….keep going Andy….fingers crossed for you.

No idea how tomorrow pans out. Could be anything from a sprint to a GC run in. The only sprinters I would think that could make it might be Bennett, Mezgec and Boassen Hagen…but the racers like Aranburu and Sanchez might fancy it…or Valverde drag a race out of the GC boys.

How many transfers have you got left?…a smart move might be to use transfers on a more certain stage…the one tomorrow is about as uncertain as it gets in this tour.

Surprised you ditched Teuns Minardi….he may keep the jersey today and tomorrow with that healthy lead.

That is why I ditched Teuns yes. I actually thought he might get dropped on the penultimate climb if the GC teams went for it.

Did Higuita crash ? I only saw him struggling with no back wheel.

    Majka looking good.

Very pleased to see Aru getting competitive again.

Yes he did. He had the wheel episode and a crash of some sort off  camera…it flashed up on commentary and discussed with the Eurosport commentators.  Poor day for me…risked one extra day without Valverde….Higuita could have offset it a bit…but not to be.

Majka did look good. Not sure he actually lost much time riding on his own compared to the four ahead..great effort.

…and yes…really pleased for Aru…he can come in now….Oscar Rodriguez doing well also on the cheaper side of things.

If he keeps it today he’ll have it until Sunday. Still, he only has a minute over Lopez and on this kind of climb that can be easy to overcome if he’s having a bad day. Teuns could survive though, but I fancy Lopez to be back in red tonight.

Hope you all have an ample

Hope you all have an ample supply of tea and biscuits ready for Eurosport.

No break after 40kms after Cavagna and Storer were dangled out in front at 20-40 seconds for quite a while. This could be an epic day if they get to that first climb all together….surely not…

Just Uran > Pogacar for me today. Not thrilled about keeping Higuita because he looks a bit off….he can go tomorrow.

Surprised you ditched Teuns Minardi….he may keep the jersey today and tomorrow with that healthy lead.

Uran out for Pogacar for me,

Uran out for Pogacar for me, and my useless 3 pointer for Niklas Eg. I’ll assess Chaves as a long term pick after today.

Given that I was hoping to

Given that I was hoping to get through this week with no transfers, I’m not doing very well.

2 more changes for today, Valverde & Pogacar in for Uran & Teuns

    ROGLIC
    LOPEZ
    QUINTANA
    VALVERDE
    ARANBURU
    LATOUR
    POGACAR
    MADRAZO

I doubt this will happen very

I doubt this will happen very often.

Uran has left a big hole in my team….So my choices are…Uran > oldest rider in the race (Valverde) or Uran > youngest rider in the race (Pogacar).

    Strange days,

Crikey. I really did miss a big day. Got to love the Vuelta and got to love the lack of the Sky train…makes things very unpredictable.

So just Higuita now really for EF…and he’s not looking that great up the toughest of summits.

Valverde actually looks like he could have a good shot at winning this…Roglic aside.

They still have Martinez who is 2minutes off the top 10 and Craddock who was trying for the break today.
