    or so it says on the massive poster up in Manchester city centre. I’ve also seen lots of other “I am not a cyclist” posters around the bus shelters of Greater Manchester. How nice of TFGM to reinforce my sense of superiority. I always knew that those others on bike were just that, people-on-bikes. Not a real Cyclist like myself. The first time I had a hankering to pull on some lycra I knew I wasn’t just a bike rider, but a cyclist. I will continue to look down on other bike riders, as I am sure will other road users. As we know, all drivers are motorists and highly competent, I am sure they will take great care to look out for these non-cyclists. Thanks TFGM.

    I’m not offended by it, but the first time I saw one of these posters was this morning on the back of a bus.

    The driver of which then decided to try and pull out in front of me, leaving me with cock all gap between the right hand side of the bus and the car that was over taking me. Not really the sort of move you want pulled on a dual carriageway where the 40mph limit is seen as the absolute minimum speed for most drivers. It was a bit hairy but I was chuckling to myself at the irony of that alleged ‘safety campaign’ potentially being the last thing that flashed before my eyes before being crushed to death.

    To give them some credit, the one thing that Trams and Sports for Greater Manchester has definitely achieved amongst a lot frequent cyclists in Manchester is a black, gallows humour that develops by seeing the same utterly horrendous shite, day in day out.

    If you consider yourself a ‘cyclist’ then it’s not aimed at you. So ignore it.

    It’s quite clear that the brief for this was to increase cycling amongst the general public who currently don’t cycle and/or don’t take enough exercise. In that respect it seems successfully executed. How effective it is remains to be seen. From 27 years running a marketing agency, it’s a piece of work I would be proud of.

    Alternatively, instead of ignoring it, small minded internet trolls could use it to enrich their sad lives.

    It humanises cycling for a start. Too many do use “cyclist” as a dirty word and seem to think we are some kind of vermin on the road. Which is why I try to describe cyclists as “people on bikes”.

    It shows people using cycling to get about for transport and for leisure dressed normally. There’s no crap about hivis, helmets, and no one wearing specialist clothing.

    It highlights the reasons why people cycle money, health, freedom etc, but in a non preachy way for once. Hopefully people will pick up that message.

    There’ll always some with a question about should the money be spent on infra & that we should not encourage people to ride until we have a safe network. Not from MCR, but up here there are lots of routes which can be found which are safe and quiet. Not perfect but usable.

    The same way they teach drivers not to encroach into ASL areas – you tell no one anything about it whatsoever and then marvel when no one does what you want them to do 😉

    We’ve had this argument before, I’m not going to pick it up again. If it’s that stupid it should be properly sanctioned and shouldn’t require them to be using signs they shouldn’t be using.

    I saw the Paul “I just like to stay active” on the back of a bus today. Right next to the sticker on the side of the bus telling you not to filter up the left and using the “No entry” sign that they shouldn’t really be using 8|

    It did seem a bit like they were reinforcing some sort of idea that “cyclist” is a dirty word.

    It’s not even a HiViz. It’s a Mac that just happens to be yellow. A bit like the sou’wester of old that fishermen had cause to wear. I sincerely doubt that that garment has any fluorescent qualities at all. Great to see people on their bikes in normal clothes.

    A bit along the lines of C Boardman’s view that we should just jump on a bike to pop to the shops. Ordinary people ride bikes.
    Also reminding people who drive cars that people on bikes are people too (to/too many people or ‘o’s there?).

    to be fair out of the 6 he’s the only one wearing a high (ish) vis jacket, and none are wearing helmets (from the website) so it’s not as bad as SuperPython59 may have jumped to the conclusion it is (the campaign).

    Look, if you don’t like wearing things, don’t wear them. Just like the people who don’t want to spend more than £X on a given item of clothing or equipment; don’t.

    But don’t invent an alternative universe of facts to “objectively” justify your choice. And don’t get so instantly pissy and aggressive when someone points out that that’s what you’re doing. It doesn’t speak well to your confidence in your claims.
