It was only £20 love, honest

Really interested to know what new and devious ways I can convince my wife cycling is a cheap hobby.

Obviously I already have the Black-ops bank account for major purchases; wheels, frames and groupsets, then the excuses like ‘oh that, no that’s the old Garmin/bibs/glasses’ and of course the tried and tested ‘no, those are the wheels from that old bike – unfortunately they are not compatible with this bike so I’m going to get them rebuilt’ lines.

With the combined road.cc experiences spanning thousands of years I’d love to hear how you manage to pull the wool over your wife/husband/partner’s eyes.

Don’t worry you can always set up a new account if you are worried about this getting back.

You are so right, but try as I might she won’t go for it. For some reason she thinks working out in a gym is just as good as having the wind/rain/hail in your face, pitting your wits against HGV drivers and loose surfaces and the incredible feeling of achievement when you top out on one of the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds climbs around where we live.

Just had my most recent purchase spotted… a pair “silly socks” (her words, not mine) that cost of all of £2.99 from Aldi’s recent MTB themed specialbuy weekend (she doesn’t know about the other 2 pairs yet!) There’s no hope for me of sneaking under the radar :”(

Aldi’s socks are pretty good by the way – they’re having another cycling specialbuy this weekend as well…

A friend of mine had a red
A friend of mine had a red bike and wanted a new frame so bought a new frame also in red in the hope that his wife would not notice. It wasn’t the same shade of red but he doubted his wife paid that much attention to what was in the garage anyway. Naturally the first time the newly framed bike was rolled out to no fanfare at all his wife said “what’s that? I’ve never seen that one before”

“Bollocks” I’m speculating is what he must have thought at the time that happened.

Easy… my other half is in to cycling too. So i don’t need to make excuses for my purchases at all. In fact the main problem for me is that she likes the things i buy and then goes out and buys a version of it. This will be the reason we have 9 wheelsets for 4 bikes!
