Wheel upgrade?

    Hi

I’m thinking of buying some new wheels to upgrade my ‘best’ bike – a Cannondale CAAD 10 which currently has Mavic Aksium wheels on it. The plan would be to put the Aksiums on my Genesis Equilibrium winter/commuter bike and then put the new wheels on the CAAD.

I’ve had a look at some Mavic Ksyrium Elite S wheels on Wiggle for £420.

I was wondering if it would be worth upgrading generally, and for people to perhaps suggest some alternatives.

I’m 6’0, and around 13st 9 if that helps at all (but planning to lose a bit of weight).

Budget would be around the £400 mark (or ideally a bit below).

    Cheers

Colour scheme goes with the bike well…but will be a bit of a ‘mare to keep clean – being white. i’d certainly look at their Hadron range if I was in the market for some carbon wheels in the future…

Thanks for your detailed post, I guess that’s about what I expected in terms of performance. Re goodies, I bet it’s not just me who’s eyeing up the matching jersey and swissside bottle cages/QR skewers is it?!

I am dreading the cleaning though – thinking that maybe some snowfoam that car geeks use might come in handy. That and *careful* use of a jetwasher. My Trek Madone 4.5 is black/white with a hint of red/blue – it’s the old team colours, and should look ace with the Francs. I have ranted on here in the past about everything being a variation of black/white/red, but screw it, I got good deals on both the bike and wheels.

Think I just need to let her
Think I just need to let her forget about it for a bit and then go for a sneaky purchase.

It worked with my Fizik shoes!

(Or there’s always the “It was only £40 on Wiggle” approach my club-mates take!)

Take a wheel off and say
Take a wheel off and say you’re off to get it looked at at the LBS – “I think there’s something not right dearest” – take the wheel out for a drive in the car and come back effing and blinding at the cost of a repair (make it >60% the cost of the new wheel if she asks)… Order the new wheel (and the matching one). Profit (for the wheel seller).

Seem to be 439Euro/£347 on their site?

I had previously signed up to their mailing list, through which they provided the discount code ‘swisssidepromo’. No reason you can’t use it too. I opted for the free delivery option, but they still sent using the express48 service. They were well-boxed and included a spare spoke for each different spoke length, QR skewers, rim tape (already fitted), a pair of snazzy-looking bidons and a pack of blingy stickers which will probably find their way onto laptops etc.

Given the same direct-to-customer model which ensures the likes of Canyon bikes look great value, a reasonably favourable exchange rate, and reviews comparing them to Dura-Ace C24s, it feels like I got a great deal. Although one of my club-mates took one look at them, all shiny and rather pro-looking, laughed and said “you better be fit to ride round on those next summer!”

I’ve put in around 200kms on my Francs now, nice wheels, but some crosswind instability when you hit hedgerow gaps, not too hard to keep under control though. The wheels are stiff and accelerate better than the Fulcrum 5s they replaced, but feel more compliant and less harsh than the Fulcrums. +1 for the service…I bought mine through Ebay (from the Swiss Side folks), got them for €350 all in – so equates to roughly the same discounted price and came with same extras in the box as Notfastenough, so was delighted on opening the ‘prezzie’ when the box arrived. Kyseriums are bomb proof. No
Kyseriums are bomb proof. No truing required. Best add-on to my bike. You don’t want the bottom end ones though, you need the ones with the aluminium milling around the rim. Class.

She thinks it’s a total waste of time as I’ve “got wheels already”.

This is of course true, but the AlexRims on the Genesis weigh a tonne…..! ;)

tell her your would be new wheels are rounder.

I think you’ll find that most non-cyclists, including Mrs Nixster, struggle to tell one set of wheels from another (particularly if you avoid huge decals) 😉

    Conti Gatorskins and 4 Season
Conti Gatorskins and 4 Season tyres always feels ‘sluggish’ to me and just bounce and skip along at high pressures. GP4000s a better bet, or the Vredestein Xtreme. Read an article in an Australian Cycle magazine that claimed there was nearly a 20 watt increase in rolling resistance between the GP4000 and the 4 Season which is a big difference

Thanks for posting – I suppose that’s the thing with reviews, the last one I read pointed out a complete lack of crosswind buffeting, which contrasts with this one. It does make me wonder whether I should have opted for the Ti skewer upgrade to go with them.

    Shimano 6700s are over 1600g
Shimano 6700s are over 1600g with rim tape. I found them a dull unresponsive wheel. My Fulcrum 5s (2014, with the bigger axle) though heavier feel a much better more lively wheel.

Fulcrum 3s are excellent too, stiff and lively. It’s not all about weight.

I recently got some Zondas for my CAAD10 (with Shimano 10sp hub). Haven’t put a lot of miles on them yet, but I find them excellent so far. Have some Krysium Elite S’s on another bike and I’d have to say there’s not much between them and the Zondas, and the Zondas were almost half the price.

    I had my fulcrum 3s for 2
I had my fulcrum 3s for 2 years and I use them everyday for everything, commute, weekend rides, they have taken a lot of abuse and are still true. The front rim is showing signs of wear but I have done a lot of miles on the wheels and they have been excellent.
