Would people prefer it if we turned off commenting on reports of fatalities?

    We don't have commenting on reports of court cases for legal reasons, but we could turn them off on reports of fatalities and witness appeals too – and then if people want to discuss aspects of what was reported they can do so by starting a forum thread instead rather than having arguments develop in the comments on the story about aspects of the report.

    Let me know what you think…

    Not in the slightest…I have a beard and ride single speeds so I am one of those bearded wierdos. I don’t give a hoot who wears a helmet or not, but I certainly don’t go posting stupid comments on a thread about a 16 year old who’s just been killed, which is what this thread is actually about by the way.

    But hey all you’ve gone and done is post a comment flaming another comment (about helmets funnily enough) without actually contributing anything to the actual topic in hand…so yay, go you!

    road.cc frequently hits the
    road.cc frequently hits the top of the Google searches for some cycling related news stories, and gets posted on the BBC News site for linked stories and comment. Friends and relatives of the cyclist involved in a fatal collision may well end up seeing the story, and my thoughts spring from that assumption and strong possibility.

    Some comments do smack of turning up at a funeral with a bunch of protest banners and a bullhorn. There’s a time, and a place. And there’s the wrong time, and the wrong place. And I’ve been on protest rides, so not coming at this from the diehard count-every-gram roadie angle.

    Turn comments off – no. But with caveats.

    Comments mourning the loss of a brother or sister of the wheel, and expressing our shared sadness – yes.

    Ruthless moderation to delete or move off-topic and inflammatory comments best kept for forums – yes.

    I think its a good idea to turn comments off. I would have thought that anything said by a stranger on a cycling forum would be pifflingly insignificant to a person who has just lost a friend or loved one in a bike crash, but given that the subjects of helmets and hi vis seem to be so divisive on here then anyone who wishes to rant and rave from their particular soapbox can do so in a corner of the forum without affecting the rest of us.

    I’m new to this forum but have long experience of motorcycle forums (fora? forae?) and yes, the wider public dislike or don’t understand us, yes politicians dislike us, and yes, sadly, sometimes our fellow two-wheelers die in accidents. There’s the usual arguments over PPE vs personal freedom of choice too.

    I’m not saying we shouldn’t acknowledge this and discuss it, but lets not get trapped into forgetting the hugely,joyously life-affirming side of what we do.

    I’d not like to see any/opt out of seeing news/fatalities stories full stop. I know they happen every day but that’s not the point, I’m a recreational cyclist I want to read about carbon fibre and titanium and go faster beetroot drinks.

    I also agree that comments should be stopped, there seem to be people with a very lopsided agenda/chip on their shoulder about wearing helmets/safety products.

    I think there should just be one sprawling epic “safety debate” thread then all of those bearded weirdos that want to argue that not wearing helmets, riding with headphones in the dark without hands is their god given right by dammit can just shout, rant and call everything anecdotal evidence.

    Any deviation from the helmet posting rule will mean 400 laps of richmond on a brompton before they’re allowed back on the forum.

    Guys, you should keep the comments on, and moderate the forum reactively by using a “report this post” button. I think most cyclists are quite reasonable, so the moderation requirement would probably be quite small when compared to other websites.

    Apart from anything, comments about deaths mean the safety message is getting out there, since it’s not just cyclists that read them.

    Might be a good idea. Sympathy posts are understandable but when it degenerates into name calling over helmets it’s inappropriate. Maybe a ban on the ‘H’ word for 2014 would save a lot of name calling.

    I think if we were to keep the comments open we would need to rely heavily on posters maturity in not diverging from the actual topic. That of showing our respects to family and friends. I know I can be guilty of jumping into a bunny trail without thinking and for that I ‘fess up. If it were to remain open I think the moderators would need to be more active/vigilant in ‘deleting’ inappropriate comments. I do like the idea of a separate forum thread to discuss more in depth the whys and wherefores of any such incident in the future without detracting from the more sensitive report on the news page….
