At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Cycology's Baroudeur Men's Jersey is a highly breathable, comfortable and affordable jersey, perfect for a bold personality on spring/summer rides. Part of Cycology's 'Performance Jersey' range, its lightweight fabrics create a close fit without irritation while maintaining a full range of movement.

  • Pros: Soft, comfortable feeling fabric; good price
  • Cons: Sizes up large; deep pockets less easy to access than some

Cycology loves designing loud, brash jerseys and its Baroudeur Men's Jersey does not disappoint. Somehow this is one of Cycology's more understated creations with 'a hint of vintage', but you certainly won't be ignored on your next group ride. It's designed for an 'adventurous rider who likes to lead, to mix it up, push the pace a little'... you'd better be prepared to live up to the look!

The high quality jersey has been well designed for comfort with a lightweight, breathable and quick-wicking material, flatstitched seams to limit irritation, a hidden full-length YKK zipper allowing your preference of air flow, and a variation of gripper to match the different requirements of the arm cuffs, hip and rear hem.

The arm cuffs and hip/front hem has a laser-cut Miti Italian gripper with a soft feel that doesn't cause any irritation. The arm grippers only cover the front of the cuff, with the rear third being an extension of the sleeve material. On the whole, the arm grippers did a good job, but with weedy arms like mine, the compression wasn't always enough and they'd rise up occasionally (it's not me in the photos).

The rear hem has a silicone gripper to provide added friction to keep the jersey in place. Having said that, it couldn't compensate for the size being a little larger than ideal. The waist band would stretch too easily, especially with items in the rear pockets, allowing the bottom of the jersey to rise up. I was testing a size small, the smallest available, but it could be worth looking at a size down if you're on the cusp on the guide.

The rear pockets are good and secure, despite this movement of the jersey, with a little extra depth to them than your average jersey. That does make getting into them trickier, though, since the opening is higher up the back, but nothing to worry about.

Matching Cycology's added safety reflective trim on its Men's Logo Bib Shorts, you'll find another across the centre of the back pocket. The look of the jersey, although bright (some might say garish), matches nicely with its plain black or orange Logo shorts, with added orange leg cuffs, and the Fluoro Orange Cycling Socks.

Factor 50 fabric treatment gives peace of mind with sun protection on long sunny rides. No repeat of Team Sky's sunburn with the Baroudeur.

At £55 the Baroudeur is good value and you can perhaps forgive Cycology for a few minor sizing issues. You're not looking at your next aero jersey like the dhb Aeron LAB Raceline or the Castelli Aero Race 6.0, but you're also only having to depart with half the cash which is a huge difference.

There are others in the £80-90 range that might have a better fit, but do your research, check the Cycology sizing guide, and you could get yourself a damn good jersey at an appealing price.

Rate the product for quality of construction:

8/10

Well made jersey with good clean seams and sensible design features.

Rate the product for performance:

7/10

On the whole it's very good, but I had some issues with the back not staying in position, and the back pockets are a little higher and harder to access than 'normal'.

Rate the product for durability:

7/10

The jersey has done well throughout the test. No signs of wear or colour fade. No damage through washing or over-stretching.

Rate the product for fit:

6/10

The sizing made for excess material around the back of the waist.

Rate the product for sizing:

5/10

Comes up large, and the small (on test) is the smallest available. I struggled with the waist band moving around, creating extra bunched-up material, and the arm cuffs could do with a little more compression or friction from the gripper.

Rate the product for weight:

7/10

Not the lightest out there but felt light when wearing it, which is what matters.

Rate the product for comfort:

8/10

Very comfortable material and design. Smooth against the skin.

Rate the product for value:

Good value for money. Towards the low end of the price scale – get your size right you're onto a winner.
