Police in the Canadian city of Calgary are investigating after an elderly cyclist was killed in a collision caused by a barrier swinging into a cycle lane, with CCTV images now released of a woman who was seen allegedly tampering with the barrier minutes before the fatal collision.

Law enforcement in the Alberta city said the cyclist in his 80s was riding an e-bike along a cycleway under Reconciliation Bridge in the city when he was hit by a barrier swinging into the cycling route as he rode past at around 10.45am on Thursday 18 September.

The elderly man died from his injuries a day later despite being rushed to hospital and receiving treatment.

CCTV showed that a barrier positioned by the side of the cycle route had swung into the rider’s path, police turning their attention to a woman who was seen “interfering” with it and “causing it to encroach onto the cycle path”.

“A review of CCTV in the area has revealed that minutes before the collision occurred, a woman is observed interfering with a pathway barrier, causing it to encroach onto the cycle path,” Calgary Police explained.

“The cyclist, who was riding an e-bike, was traveling eastbound on the path, unaware of the obstruction and collided with the swinging arm of the barrier, knocking him to the ground.”

Investigators are hoping to identify and locate the woman to assist the investigation and released several CCTV images.
