Police in the Canadian city of Calgary are investigating after an elderly cyclist was killed in a collision caused by a barrier swinging into a cycle lane, with CCTV images now released of a woman who was seen allegedly tampering with the barrier minutes before the fatal collision.
Law enforcement in the Alberta city said the cyclist in his 80s was riding an e-bike along a cycleway under Reconciliation Bridge in the city when he was hit by a barrier swinging into the cycling route as he rode past at around 10.45am on Thursday 18 September.
The elderly man died from his injuries a day later despite being rushed to hospital and receiving treatment.
CCTV showed that a barrier positioned by the side of the cycle route had swung into the rider’s path, police turning their attention to a woman who was seen “interfering” with it and “causing it to encroach onto the cycle path”.
“A review of CCTV in the area has revealed that minutes before the collision occurred, a woman is observed interfering with a pathway barrier, causing it to encroach onto the cycle path,” Calgary Police explained.
“The cyclist, who was riding an e-bike, was traveling eastbound on the path, unaware of the obstruction and collided with the swinging arm of the barrier, knocking him to the ground.”
Investigators are hoping to identify and locate the woman to assist the investigation and released several CCTV images.

“The woman is described as having long dark hair tied into a ponytail with a white ribbon, and was wearing a shirt that read ‘Peace for All’. Photos of the woman are available on The City of Calgary Newsroom,” the release continued.
“Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.”

I see no reason why any mod
I see no reason why any mod might remove it, seems pertinent to a site that really does care about road violence.
Unfortunately, the article, for me at least, is paywalled. If you can read it fully, please cut and paste some of the body of the text.
I wouldn’t have expected it
I wouldn’t have expected it to be removed, but perhaps moved to a more appropriate place. It seemed like the most logical current article to comment on. I will see if I can access the full article and copy here!
I don’t personally sub to that rag but I know some who do.
“A DRIVER has been fined £200
“A DRIVER has been fined £200 for the driving that left a six-year-old with a fractured pelvis and backbone.
The boy was on his way to school with his mother when they were both knocked off their bicycles, York magistrates heard.
Mel Ibbotson, prosecuting, said car driver Ka Fai Wong, 55, pulled out of a side road as the family was crossing from a cycle lane into the side road.
“He was fully responsible for the accident and was apologetic and extremely distressed about what had happened,” said defence solicitor Lee-Anne Robins-Hicks. “He bitterly regrets that he didn’t see them.”
Wong, of Tilmire Close, Fulford, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving.
Magistrates said he had had a “momentary lapse of concentration” and though his driving merited a community order, they could give him a “punitive” fine instead.
Community orders can include defendants doing unpaid work for the community, rehabilitative activities, curfews and drug or alcohol treatments.
They fined him £200 and ordered him to pay a £80 statutory surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.
They also banned him for 12 months but decided not to make him take an extended driving test before driving alone again.
Ms Ibbotson said the mother was in front and the boy behind as they rode along the cycle lane by the side of Field Lane in Badger Hill, east York, on July 1. Visibility was good and the road surface was dry.
They waited at the junction of Sussex Road and Field Lane while three vehicles pulled out of Sussex Road and drove off.
Then Wong’s car was stationary at the junction and appeared to be letting the two cyclists cross.
“As they crossed the road, the vehicle driven by the defendant has then driven into (the mother),” said Ms Ibbotson.
She fell off her bike and saw her son also on the ground.
An eyewitness told police they saw the car set off and shouted at the cyclists to stop. They also told police the driver tried to stop before hitting the cyclists.
Mrs Robins-Hicks said Wong had been watching a truck passing in front of him and had thought the junction was clear when he pulled out.
But the mother and son were already in the carriageway.
After the collision he had immediately pulled up and got out of his car to try and help.
“Since this incident he has had difficulty sleeping,” said Mrs Robins-Hicks. He was also struggling with depression. However members of his church were helping him.
He had been in the UK since 2021 and feared that his conviction would make renewing his permission to stay difficult.
Mrs Robins-Hicks said Wong was the full-time carer for his family which lived on his wife’s job at a charity shop.”
