Rabobank’s Marianne Vos has continued her dominance of the 2013 Women’s World Cup as she sealed her fifth victory in the Flèche Wallonne Féminine this afternoon. Elisa Longo Borghini of Hitec Products was second, with Lotto-Belisol’s Ashleigh Moolmans third.
It’s world and Olympic champion Vos’s third victory in four World Cup races so far this season, and one that came after an attack by Cipollini-Giordana’s Tatiana Guderzo from five kilometres out had been shut down by the foot of the final climb of the Mur de Huy.
The efforts of that climb to the finish of the 131.5 kilometre race caused Longo Borghini – winner of the only World Cup race so far in 2013 that Vos has failed to win, last month’s Trofeo Binda – to collapse after crossing the line, although she was reported to have recovered quickly.
The top-placed British rider was Lizzie Armitstead of Boles-Dolmans, who finished twelfth.
