Video: Lovely time-lapse of Queensland's Commonwealth Games velodrome being built

Facility being used in 2018 event will be named after Aussie track legend Anna Meares

One of the big cycling stories ahead of the Rio Olympic Games was whether the velodrome would be finished on time, and even if it was, whether it would be up to hosting the event – but it looks like there will be no such worries ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Last week, it was announced that the venue will be named after Australia’s multiple world and Olympic champion, Anna Meares, and a time-lapse video released earlier this month shows the Siberian pine surface of the track being laid.

Annastacia Palaszczuk, Queensland’s Premier said it was an obvious choice to name the velodrome after the 32-year-old Meares, who comes from the state.

“When the venue is complete, the Anna Meares Velodrome will be the first velodrome in the world with digital broadcast-quality LED lighting,” she said, quoted on 9 News.

She added: “It’s only appropriate that our world-class venue is named after a world-class athlete."

Meares, an 11 time world champion and winner of six Olympic medals including golds in the 500m time trial at Athens in 2004 and the individual sprint at London 2012, is reportedly undecided about whether to continue her track career through to a home Commonwealth Games.
