* Update: it seems that Muc-Off’s magic protective formula is proving so popular that it’s all sold out! Muc-Off tell us that it will be back in stock on 22nd September 2025 – if you want to find out the exact moment you can get your hands on some, head over to the product page on Muc-Off’s website and ask to be notified when the Ceramic Protection Kit is back in stock.

There are some cyclists who simply love the act of getting on a bike – any bike – and turning their legs. For them, it doesn’t really matter what they are pedalling.

But for the vast majority of people who identify as ‘cyclists’, the equipment we use is a vital part of our cycling persona. In that regard, nothing is as important as having a bike that you enjoy spending time riding and – crucially – are proud to be seen with.

When it comes to showing off your bike in the best possible condition, Muc-Off are the proven masters. Since 1994, the Poole-based brand have been making innovative, eco-conscious and bike-friendly care and maintenance products to keep your pride and joy looking its best and running smoothly.

But recently, Muc-Off’s experts have taken things a step further with their silicon-infused Ceramic Protection system that won’t just protect your bike, but will make keeping it clean even easier by repelling mud and grime for up to two years.

How it works

Muc-Off’s Ceramic Coating is a highly advanced, durable protective layer that chemically bonds with your bike’s paintwork to produce a high-performance hydrophobic layer for maximum water and dirt-shedding properties. The unique formula coating drastically reduces the surface tension, providing long-term protection, even in the harshest weather conditions.

In addition to this, it also helps to reduce the risk of micro scratches, and its UV protection also helps to ensure paintwork doesn’t fade in direct sunlight – making it a true all-year-round defence.

As with all its high-performance product launches, Muc-Off invested hundreds of hours in testing and development. This included scratch testing – to understand the level of impact the coating can withstand – as well as accelerated wash testing to measure the surface breakdown across a range of cleaning solutions over time.

This in-house testing was complemented with extensive real-world testing, including application on dozens of team bikes from Muc-Off’s sponsored teams such as INEOS Grenadiers, EF Education-Easypost and Commencal/Muc-Off, all of which feature different paint finishes. This testing allowed Muc-Off’s experts to micro-adjust the formula to create a product that delivers maximum protective performance.

Getting started with the Muc-Off Ceramic Protection Kit – buy now for £60

So how do you get started with Muc-Off’s Ceramic Protection? It’s easy, and Muc-Off have put together a complete kit with all the bits you need to apply it and protect your bike. In the kit you will find: 50ml Surface Preparation Spray; 15ml Ceramic Coating Formula; one microfibre applicator pad; and two luxury microfibre buffing cloths.

Applying the Ceramic Coating is super straightforward. We’ll give you the abbreviated process here – you will find full instructions with your kit or on the Muc-Off website. In fact, Muc-Off even has a video showing you what you need to do…

First you need to prepare the surface by thoroughly washing and completely drying your bike (Muc-Off’s new It Blows! Precision Air Blaster ANCHOR will help here – about which, more later). Fix any finish imperfections – such as swirl marks, water spots, or scratches – that you don’t want sealed by the Ceramic Coating. Then spray the Surface Preparation Spray onto the microfibre cloth and wipe down all painted surfaces.

To use the Ceramic Coating, simply shake the bottle thoroughly for 10 seconds to activate the formula, then apply it sparingly and evenly using the microfibre applicator pad. Allow the coating to cure for five minutes, then use the microfibre cloth to lightly buff the surface to achieve high gloss, mirror-like finish.

Once buffed, let the coating fully cure for 24 hours in a cool, dry place before exposing it to water or the elements. For best results, Muc-Off recommends not washing your bike for at least 48 hours after application. But once those 48 hours are up, you’re completely good to go and protected for up to two years.
