A cyclist has been fined £300 for causing a collision with a motorcyclist at the top of Winnats Pass in August.
Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard that Eleanor Kelly did a U-turn at the top of the steep Peak District climb and in so doing caused a collision that resulted in injuries to a motorcyclist.
The Derbyshire Times reports that Kelly said she checked before making the manoeuvre but must have misjudged the speed of the motorcycle.
She pleaded guilty to riding a bicycle without due care and attention and was fined £185 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
Earlier this month we reported on the inquest into the death of August Atkinson who died after crashing while descending Winnats Pass in 2014.
Her mother, Elizabeth Barber-Atkinson, says she may challenge the verdict, arguing that police evidence didn’t satisfactorily answer what may have gone wrong on her daughter’s bike.
Atkinson is said to have screamed “my brakes have gone” shortly before hitting a drystone wall, but police found ‘no significant issues’.

I sold my bike with Ultegra calliper brakes as they were terrible in the wet on fast descents. Hydraulic disc brakes are like night and day in comparison, excellent braking in all conditions. I suspect callipers tested in the dry confines of the police station may well appear ok, put them on a wet descent and the story will be much different.

Sounds like a set-up/pads issue – I’ve never had any problem with my 105/Ultegra callipers, including down some pretty big descents in the wet in the Alps.
I generally consider you will run out of grip on the road long before you run out of brakes.
And that comes after many, many years of hydraulic disc brakes on my mountain bike.

No, perhaps you should better understand which person/incident I am referring to.

Read the headline.
“Cyclist fined for crash after doing U-turn at the top of Winnats Pass”
What does it say?
Nope, still nothing about brakes.
If you want to comment about the lady who died when her brakes may or may not have failed then do so under the article
http://road.cc/content/news/232524-cyclist-screamed-%E2%80%9Cmy-brakes-have-gone%E2%80%9D-crash-killed-her-inquest-told
But you’ll probably want to read all the comments already made because pretty much every possible scenario has already been hammered out and it’s all pretty old having people blathering on about caliper brakes being lethal and disc brakes being the only solution, despite the fact that in some of the articles related to the story the bike in question did have disc brakes. Making your comment about caliper brakes being the cause of this lady’s unfortunate accident totally redundant

Disc brakes are amazing aren’t they! I spent 30 odd years of road cycling hurtling off cliffs and having head on collisions will all manner of walls/vehicles/livestock. I was never out of A&E. They even named a ward after me. Thankfully now that I’ve got a bike with discs I’ve given the NHS a well needed break (excuse the pun). Best cycling innovation ever!
God bless disc brakes and all who modulate with them!

Disc brakes are better than rim brakes as long as they are hydraulic. They are also nicer to use and easier for small hands, and require less force to apply. Cyclists doing u turns that cause crashes should be punished. Badly behaved cyclists are a problem for everyone, and it is easy to see the bad attitudes displayed by the ‘Yorkshireman’ who post on here.

Valbrona, you have my sincerest apologies for calling you a racist. You crack on shoehorning your fear and hatred into posts. It marks you out as exactly the same as the terrorists that you should be identifying as the bad uns, you don’t have the brains to recognise that Muslims are not the bad guys, it’s terrorists and they come in all sorts of colours, nationalities, religions and races. By trying to turn everything into Muslim bashing makes you no better than the terrorists, indescriminate in you hatred towards everyone of a certain religion.
I image you hate the Welsh for Meibion Glyndwr, the Irish for the IRA, or is it the UDA, the Spanish for ETA, Germans for Baader Meinhof, etc, etc.
You stop posting you’re hatred and I’ll stop calling you out for being a racist. How does that sound? I don’t believe in banning you as not only do we have free speech, but people need to see you for what you are.

Surely she could have used th motorist’s standard “I was momentarily distracted” excuse (perhaps there was a low-flying bird-of-prey or something…) If I recall correctly, a driver with 2 illegal tires took out a clubrun and killed 6 people a few years back and was fined less (on the grounds he hit ice on the bend so the tires would have made no difference). Seems like two-track justice again.
Article doesn’t mention what evidence was entered regarding the speed of the motorcyclist who must surely have seen the cyclist and been driving at a speed which allowed them to avoid the collision? I’m all for all road users being accountable for their actions but not completely convinced by this outcome on the available information.

And what speed do you think would have been appropriate for the motorcyclist in this instance? Sorry, but the cyclist has a responsibility to look properly before making a u turn.

To Mr Turner’s child, I shouldn’t have used naughty words, they are not nice. I was angry as someone without an ounce of the intelligence, that I’m sure you already have, has such a disgusting view of the World. I am pretty sure you will go to school with people who have a different skin colour, who were born in another country and some with a big nose or curly hair. If the curly haired child is mean, it doesn’t make all curly haired people mean. If you fear curly haired people based on this one person you may miss out on a potential life long friend, if you tell others that curly haired people are bad you will spread hate and fear. Oh and always wear a helmet and hi viz…

Hi all,
Hi all,
Well when I say ‘all’ I’m really meaning Alan, Ian, and Don – just thought I’d flag up the fact that personal abuse – whether you think it’s justified or not – is against road.cc’s T&Cs + it’s not very nice to be on the receiving end of, and it’s awkward to explain to your kids.
Yes, I know explaining awkward stuff is a key part of the job description for being a parent, but there’s plenty of awkwardness already in the world to be explained without you chaps adding to it – especially when you could have made your points just as forcefully without the effing and jeffing.
It’s Christmas so maybe a bit more peace and goodwill to all men? Or if you can’t manage that disagreeing in language that won’t have to be explained by other road.cc users to their kids and won’t put them off coming here.

However, if you’re worried about people being put off your website if suggest looking at the cause for multiple posters reacting in the same way. Of Valbrona’s 250 posts around 200 have contained racist content, he’s used the word Muslim more often than bike!
The fact that you pick up on poor language rather than racist, xenophobic, hateful content is frankly pretty disgusting. I feel this (your reaction as well as the content) reflect worse upon your site than the effing and jeffin!
