It’s one of the most embarrassing things that can happen to a pro cyclist – starting celebrating a victory only for another rider to pass you ahead of the line to snatch the won.

That’s what happened yesterday at the 77th Tour de l’Eurométropole in Belgium, with the Cofidis rider Anthony Turgis left ruing his premature jubilation as Britain’s Dan McLay, riding for the Fortuneo-Oscaro team, emerged triumphant.

Turgis was also overhauled by the Wanty-Groupe Gobert rider, Kenny Dehaes, to finish in third place at the end of the 188.6-kilometre race from La Louviere to Tournoi.

It doesn’t just happen to the pros, of course – remember this story from last year of a rider getting pipped to the line at the ia Roma Twilight Criterium support race in Cirencester, Gloucestershire?
