The BBB CoreCaps Valve Caps are a radical departure from the traditional Presta valve design. By replacing the standard internal core with a high-flow system, BBB aims to increase airflow by up to 300 per cent, specifically to aid in the difficult task of seating stubborn tubeless tyres. While the theory is sound, the real world execution introduces several compatibility hurdles that riders need to be prepared for.

Design and mechanism

The CoreCaps function by replacing your standard Presta valve core with a proprietary unit that removes the narrow internal ‘bottleneck’ of a traditional Presta valve to increase airflow.

For those who like to colour-coordinate their build, BBB offers them in a great range of anodised finishes, including copper, purple, gold, red, blue, and black. However, it’s worth noting that there is no protective cap, so it’s open to the elements at all times, which may be a concern for those riding in particularly muddy or gritty conditions.

Pumping and compatibility challenges

The biggest surprise with the CoreCaps, and something that isn’t made particularly clear in the documentation, is that they convert your valve into a Schrader-style fitment. This means you must use a Schrader pump head to inflate your tyres.

In testing, this presented several issues. If you own a high-end track pump that is Presta-only, it will no longer work with your bike. Similarly, many popular modern portable electric pumps are Presta-dedicated and will be incompatible without an adaptor. You will also have to ensure your mini-pump is Schrader-compatible if you want to be able to fix a flat or adjust pressure during a ride.

Performance and seating

The primary goal of this system is to provide enough “oomph” to seat tubeless tyres without needing a compressor. However, in my experience, the CoreCaps didn’t provide the miracle cure I was hoping for. Even with the increased airflow, I still found I needed to use a tubeless blaster/canister to get enough initial volume to seat a tubeless tyre.

While the airflow is better than a standard Presta, it didn’t quite replace the need for dedicated tubeless seating tools in every scenario.

Value

At £14.99 for a pair, you get the end caps, a lock ring and a seal, meaning you need a tubeless valve already. BBB also sells a complete set including the valve stem for £24.99 for a pair.

For £19.99, Topeak sells its Turboflow valves which also replace the regular Presta cores with an increased airflow option. For £24.99, you also get a compatible Rapidhead pump head to increase airflow further. These valves aren’t compatible with screw-on pumps, but they are compatible with standard Presta pumps. These are similar to the Halo Hi-Flow Converter Valves, which are £14.99.

Muc-Off sells its Big Bore Lite valves for £40 for a pair. These look like regular valves but with a ball valve in them to either allow airflow or completely block it. They cost a bit more, but are one of the best thought-out higher airflow options out there.

Conclusion

The BBB CoreCaps are a bold attempt to address the limitations of the century-old Presta design. They are well-made and look great on the bike, but the trade-offs are significant. The move to a Schrader interface creates a compatibility headache across your tool kit, and the performance gains weren’t quite enough to handle difficult tyre/rim combinations on their own.

Any further comments on performance?:

There is an increased airflow, but I haven’t found it to be astronomical, and the lack of compatibilty with presta pumps is a big downside.

How does the price compare to that of similar products in the market, including ones recently tested?:

It’s similar to the Topeak Turboflow and Muc-Off big bore, when you take into account the need for an existing tubeless valve.

A nicely thought-out option to try to make tubeless setups easier, but the lack of Presta compatibility is a big negative for me.
