The Nook Hack Bicycle Phone Holder is a surprisingly decent budget phone mount. While it’s not the sleekest way to stick your phone on your handlebars, the build and grip strength are reassuringly solid, and its price tag is extremely appealing.
Because, obviously, we can’t do anything for five seconds without looking at our phones, bike phone mounts have become a big market. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from cheap PVC and velcro-based top-bar encasements to slick case-and-mount combos from the likes of Quadlock and Mous.
The Nook Hack Bicycle Phone Holder is one of a growing number of handlebar mounts that leave your mobile exposed to the elements, which is perfectly fine given the water resistance of modern phones. It attaches to your bars (22.2 to 31.8mm) via a circular bracket, and then a vice-like screw tightens a clamp that holds your phone in place.

That’s kind of it, but there’s something reassuring about its machined-aluminium simplicity. There is also one neat twist: it can rotate fully thanks to a ratchet-type mechanism between the phone holdy bit and the handlebar mounty bit, which means you can put your phone in landscape mode and catch up on Netflix while you ride to work.

In practice, it’s as solid as products that cost many times as much. I tried a whole bunch of phones, including a whopping 6.7-inch Pixel 7 Pro, and found the grip on the phone to be substantial and strong, even when tackling tricky, bumpier terrain. The contact points between the handlebars and the phone are reinforced with rubber, which hopefully mitigates the unlikely possibility that ongoing vibrations will damage phone cameras’ increasingly intricate optics.

Releasing your phone is simply a question of twiddling the screw a little bit, which is something that can be done in seconds – although it is trickier when you’re wearing gloves.
Without the phone to clamp on to, the bracket does rattle. I could live with it, but to mitigate this effect you could always install something like an old flip-flop or a can of sardines in place of your phone.

It also takes up quite a lot of visual space on your handlebars: elegant it ain’t.
Previously £14.99 and currently listed at £11.49, this is one of the cheapest phone mounts you can buy. The closest comparison is Lezyne’s Smart Vice, which uses the same principle – albeit in a smaller and easier to remove format — but it’s twice the price.
The Loop Micro Mount costs even more at £40, but takes up even less room when not in use. And once you get into the £50-plus territory you’re looking at full ecosystem kits from Quad Lock and Peak Design, which require you to buy a specific case as well as a mount.
The Nook Hack Bicycle Phone Holder may lack finesse, but given the price it more than makes up for this in sheer practicality and durability.
