Felt has updated its Breed gravel platform with frame weights as low as 950g (size 54) and complete bikes as light as 7.037kg. Felt also claims a 10.5% drag improvement over the previous generation.

Felt was founded in California back in 1994 but it’s now under new ownership and based in Barcelona. We recently told you about the brand’s new Nexar aero road bike (and we have one in for review) with a claimed full-bike weight of just 6.48kg, and it looks like Felt has been trying to achieve similar things with the updated Breed, combining a low weight with aero efficiency.
Whereas some gravel bikes are focused on exploration and adventure, the Felt Breed is a gravel race bike. Okay, there might not be too many gravel races around the UK, but the Breed certainly has its focus on speed. It’s not for loading up with bags and heading off into the sunset, basically.

It will take a tyre up to 54mm wide at the front and 52mm at the rear, though… but we’re getting ahead of ourselves. We’ll come back to those kind of details in a bit; what is Felt aiming at here?
“The Breed is not an adaptation of a road or adventure bike,” says Felt. “It is a purpose built gravel racing platform, developed for modern competition where speed, control, and durability must coexist at the highest level.
“The previous Breed generation launched in 2022 was already setting benchmarks, introducing solutions that later became category standards such as oversized tyre clearance, multiple integrated bottle mounts and a race focused geometry.

Felt says it applied Advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to identify high-stress and low-stress zones across the frame.
“This allowed reinforcement only where structural loads demand it, while reducing carbon material in areas that do not require additional strength,” it says. “The result is maximum efficiency with minimal excess weight.
“With a frame weighing 950g in size 54, the Breed FRD achieves a benchmarking overall weight of 7.037kg. This represents a 22.8% weight reduction versus the previous equivalent Breed model.”

Every race bike launch comes supported with a few big numbers these days – that’s the bike industry for you. The Breed frame actually comes in two different carbon layups.
Felt says, “The FRD and Pro models use [our] highest grade carbon, delivering maximum structural efficiency, very low weight, and precise handling for elite and high level competitive racing.

“The Expert and Race builds feature a proven Felt carbon construction, slightly heavier but optimised for durability and stiffness while maintaining the same race focused geometry.”
While we’re giving out figures, Felt says that the new Breed offers a 10.5% drag reduction compared with the previous generation, although it doesn’t tell us the speed or yaw angles at which it tested, nor make comparisons with bikes from other brands.

“Tube shapes have been optimised to improve airflow streamlining, with cleaner transitions and straighter tube sections that reduce turbulence across critical areas of the frame,” says Felt. “The fully integrated cockpit features an exceptionally slim profile, significantly lowering frontal area and creating a clean leading edge where most aerodynamic drag originates.”
Felt has also redesigned the fork to manage airflow around wider tyres, lowered the Breed’s stack height (although we don’t have a geometry table to share with you so you’ll need to head over to Felt’s website for that) and lowered the seatstays to reduce frontal area and improve airflow around the rear of the bike.

The cockpit mentioned is Felt’s lightest ever integrated option (289g in the version with a 80mm stem length and 400mm drop width). Offering fully integrated cable routing, it’s designed for both the Breed and the Nexar road bike.

As mentioned earlier, the Felt Breed has clearance for a 54mm tyre up front and 52mm at the rear, although standard models come with 45mm tyres fitted. It has four bottle mounts and is said to be compatible with a suspension fork and dropper seatpost.

So for £4250 you get slightly lighter RED and slightly lighter wheels
which ,if you bought separate, are not £4000 more expensive. than the next best offerings.
Red XPLR is about £1500 more than Force XPLR and the Vision SLs are about £400 more than the i23 wheelsets. what’s the other £2000 buying you?
Those the the only differences so why over £10k for the FRD? Rip off
Well , a frame kit seems to be “affordable” compared to cervelo or specialised 😬
