The Velocio Men Luxe Merino Long Sleeve jersey takes a timeless material and gives it a modern, performance-focused twist. After weeks of riding from September into November, this quickly became my new favourite autumn jersey –it’s comfortable, versatile and refined in all the right ways.

There’s a reason merino wool has been trusted by mountaineers, sailors and shepherds for centuries. Long before synthetic fabrics promised ‘technical performance’, merino was already doing it naturally. Sourced from hardy merino sheep, its fibres are ultra-fine, breathable, temperature-regulating and naturally odour-resistant and as the cycling world keeps rediscovering, those qualities make it just about perfect for autumn rides and for part of layering setup in winter.

First impressions

Out of the bag, the Luxe Merino feels distinctly Velocio: refined, minimalist, premium. The fit is spot on – neither race-tight nor relaxed and very much in the ‘fitted endurance’ camp, which makes perfect sense for a garment designed for comfort over long hours rather than explosive sprints.

I found it true to Velocio’s size chart. My Large was a perfect fit, contouring to my torso without any pinching or slack. The sleeve length is excellent, avoiding that all-too-common shortfall when you’re reaching for the drops.

The zipper is smooth and backed by a soft placket, preventing it snagging with a base layer or chest-hair casualties (some of us have been there…).

On the road, the jersey feels reassuringly snug without being restrictive, offering just the right balance between performance and cosiness.

Performance and comfort

Across numerous rides in temperatures ranging from 5-15°C, the Luxe Merino excelled. On cooler mornings, a light gilet was all I needed for perfect comfort, and when conditions warmed up, the thermoregulating nature of merino wool kept things balanced – never clammy, never cold.

One of merino’s most underrated qualities is its ability to wick moisture yet dry rapidly once airflow returns. On a damp day under a rain cape, it absorbed a little moisture, but within minutes of removing the shell, it was bone dry again – noticeably faster than my synthetic autumn jerseys.

The natural odour resistance also means you won’t earn any sideways glances at the café stop, even after a few back-to-back rides without washing (purely for testing purposes, of course).

Design details

Velocio’s attention to detail is evident throughout. The three rear pockets are perfectly sized for essentials and feature a reinforced backing to prevent the dreaded merino sag when loaded with tools, snacks, or a phone.

A small side-entry zipped pocket adds security for keys or a card, though it isn’t waterproof; worth noting if you’re planning on stashing a car-key fob in there.

The waist gripper keeps the hem firmly anchored even when pushing on in a paceline, and the arms provide light compression that supports muscles without feeling restrictive. Whether layered under a jacket on a chilly commute or worn alone for tempo training rides, the jersey stayed comfortable for hours with no rubbing or irritation.

Durability and care

Merino wool deserves a little TLC, and Velocio’s blend – 71% wool, 18% polyamide, 11% elastane – is no different. A cool 30°C wash with mild detergent, no tumble drying, and keeping it away from greasy kit will preserve its softness and shape. After multiple washes, my Cameo Blue test jersey still looks immaculate and hasn’t adopted the speckled ‘mud patina’ that so often plagues lighter winter colours.

The fabric’s durability also stood out – it shows no signs of pilling, and the blend of merino and synthetics helps it to retain structure far better than pure wool jerseys.

Styling and colours

Velocio’s aesthetic has always been understated elegance, and this jersey fits that mould beautifully. The Cameo Blue is my personal pick of the bunch, light enough to aid visibility without shouting about it. It’s also available in Plum Truffle and Black Olive, two rich, earthy tones that suit cooler months perfectly.

Sizes range impressively from XS to 4XL, catering to riders from 54kg/160cm up to 127kg/194cm, so there’s a fit for almost everyone.

Value

At £171, there’s no doubt this is a premium jersey, but it earns its keep through comfort, craftsmanship and versatility.

The price is in the same ballpark as other high-end competitors such as the Pas Normal Studios Escapism Wool Long Sleeve, which costs £160.

The Albion Traverse is a little less expensive at £150 while the Rapha Pro Team Midweight is £165.

While all of these are in a similar price range, I think the Velocio stands proudly among them, offing an arguably softer, cleaner-cut and versatility across a wide temperature range.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly route into wool then Galibier has you covered, with its Roubaix Merino Jersey scoring well in spite of costing just £58.

Verdict

The Velocio Men’s Luxe Merino Long Sleeve Jersey is a masterclass in modern wool performance: warm when you need it, cool when you don’t and comfortable all day long. The fit is refined, the detailing thoughtful and the feel sublime.

If you embrace long autumn base rides, café spins or crisp commutes, this jersey feels like an investment in comfort and style. Yes, it’s pricey, but once you’ve ridden in high-quality merino, it’s hard to go back to synthetics.

If you want one jersey to carry you through much of the year in quiet luxury, this is it, proof that sometimes the oldest materials still deliver the most modern performance.

How easy is the product to care for? How did it respond to being washed?

Velocio details the following: “Caring for your cycling gear properly will extend its life and maintain its performance, fit and quality. It’s important to consider these instructions carefully. While we stand behind the quality of our apparel, not adhering to these instructions will void our warranty against manufacturing & defects.

“We strongly recommend washing your new gear before wearing it. You’ll find that your apparel will soften, and fit & comfort will improve after washing – especially with bibs & shorts.

“Machine wash cool, 86°F (30°C) with like colors: Cooler temps maintain better longevity for your apparel. Like colors, especially lights, will remain more vibrant when washed with like colors.

“Use mild detergent. Do not bleach or dry clean: Strong detergents & bleach can break down the fibers and elastane in the garment, dramatically reducing its life.

“Close all fastenings: this goes also for other garments mixed in with your cycling apparel. Velcro closures or clasps can catch on stitching or trim and damage your garments.

“Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry: Do not put your cycling apparel in the dryer. Even on low heat. Don’t do it. Heat can damage fabric, elastic and heat transfer logos very easily. Lycra (Elastane) is used throughout our garments to provide compression and support and is susceptible to damage from heat and can irreparably damage your apparel.”
