“How can parents be encouraged to set a better example? Are we becoming an angry, intolerant nation?” asked one cycling campaigner
The school says the “exciting” new facilities offer an alternative to cycling on busy roads or on pavements – but one neighbour fears the track will “attract the wrong type of people”
“There are areas that are safe for cyclists that will not cause damage or distress to members of the public,” said the police, who warned they will “deal proactively with any offenders”
Local authority officers conducted an “acoustic assessment” that failed to show a drastic impact on neighbouring properties, despite residents claiming that “noisy bikers” would disturb the peaceful neighbourhood
The school insisted that it wants to encourage healthy lifestyles and active travel for its pupils, but the £150,000 project hasn’t gone down well with the nearby residents
Only two per cent of pupils cycle to a school near the junction – despite a further 17 per cent saying they would like to if it were safe – while a quarter of students travel by car
The national cycle training scheme also claimed record teaching numbers are not converting to regular cycling by families, due to concerns over motorists’ attitudes and lack of protected infrastructure
Since September there have been three crashes involving drivers outside the school, prompting the headteacher to ask, “How long is it going to take to make the road safe?”
“Honestly, what this school has done for my kids is nothing short of a miracle"...
Locals claimed it wasn't the safe travel scheme they opposed, just how it was being implemented
