The Kensington and Chelsea London Borough Council has hired a private enforcement agency to hand Fixed Penalty Notices to cyclists, drawing accusations of running a “mass profit operation”
As latest cyclists ordered to pay £1,100 in court, enforcement officer justifies Grimsby's controversial bike ban by falsely claiming pedestrian was killed in cyclist collision... before council also admits sign is in area where cycling is allowed
Is it the weekend yet? Nope, but at least Ryan Mallon’s back to help you slog and struggle through the middle of the week on the Wednesday live blog. And the Tour of Britain is starting tomorrow, so things are looking up
His legs might be sore (and his face a delightful shade of red) from a weekend riding his bike in the sun, but there’s no rest day for Ryan Mallon – instead, he’s right back in the hotseat with more cycling news and views on the Monday live blog
The cyclist is the latest Grimsby resident to fall foul of the town’s Public Space Protection Order, after 1,472 fines were issued in six months last year. But the council says the orders “are only used sparingly”
According to the government’s new Crime and Policing Bill, fixed penalty notices related to public space protection orders – which attempt to crack down on “anti-social cycling” – will rise from £100 to £500
Cycling UK, however, pointed out that there is “limited dedicated cycle infrastructure” in Maidenhead and Windsor, while arguing cycling leads to increased trade and that bike bans “wrongly treat all cycling as anti-social behaviour”
The orders prohibiting cycling at all times on Maidenhead’s High Street could now be amended to a 10am-5pm ban to “promote active travel and safe cycling”, despite being renewed by the council in April last year
Council behind much-criticised ban warns "there are consequences to your actions"... although it has cut the 'no cycling' speaker message to twice an hour because "it was too repetitive"
Birmingham City Council suggested stopping the "use of illegally modified e-bikes" and those who are "cycling with disregard to other people" are the main priorities
