GoSafe Wales says it has temporarily suspended taking action on evidence submitted to Operation SNAP showing a driver passing a cyclist or pedestrian “too closely” – but a government body claims there is nothing in their guidance to warrant such a move
Operation Snap submissions have more than doubled in two years, with more than 15,000 incidents reported in 2024 and over half of reported drivers receiving notices of intended prosecution
South Wales Police say they are currently reviewing their Operation SNAP reporting portal to ensure it “remains efficient and effective” – and will only deal with the “most serious cases” until further notice
Welcome one and all to the end of the week live blog, join Adwitiya as he takes you through all the twists and turns of news, views, and all the other chatter from the cycling world
Avon and Somerset Police received 8,595 videos of alleged road offences from motorists and cyclists in 2024, 90 per cent of which resulted in some form of action being taken
More than 200,000 incidents were reported to police since 2021, with Avon and Somerset road users the most prolific, followed by West Yorkshire; though some forces are still reluctant to deal with all reports from cyclists or drivers
The new advice, issued to road users who have recently submitted footage of alleged driving offences to the Met, also warns cyclists to avoid posting clips on social media
Announcing Gloucestershire Police’s participation in Operation Snap, the force’s non-crime unit head said cyclists “get quite frustrated with us” for failing to prosecute close passing motorists
Six months on from admitting the need to review how reports are managed, the latest West Midlands Police figures show the force did not take further action of some form in just three of 356 reports made by cyclists during January
The force’s response comes after an FOI request revealed that, of the almost 4,000 allegations of driving offences submitted over the past 15 months, only 10 resulted in prosecution
