A new study has found that areas which host the Tour see a decline in support for extremist parties, with the economic benefits and visibility associated with the race overcoming feelings of neglect… especially if a French rider wins
Researchers from the University of Washington have built a small sensor that plugs into a handlebar and tracks close passes from motorists, which they say could eventually help cyclists find safer city routes
The report, which examined mindfulness when overtaking cyclists and horses, found that one in three motorists often or always feel frustrated towards cyclists on the road, and that 70 per cent believe cyclists “don’t obey road rules”
The deteriorating performance could be as much as the difference between finishing seventh and eighth in the Tour de France general classification
The research also suggests people with a "stronger tendency for expressing anger" when driving will view close pass incidents as "lower risk" and attribute more liability to cyclists involved
Dr Mark Limb chats to the road.cc Podcast about helmets, hi-vis, infrastructure, and the need for more research on why cyclists can be dehumanised by motorists
The new study from Australia found that an alarming number of people do not see cyclists as human, 30 per cent saying they considered those riding bicycles as less than fully human
Of those surveyed, 30 per cent said they considered cyclists as less than fully human
The academic who conducted the study wanted to discover why owners of those brands appear to drive more recklessly, and identified their character traits as "argumentative, stubborn, disagreeable and unempathetic"
