The Magicshine RAY 3000 pumps out tons of light in a very road-friendly high/dipped beam, for ages. It comes with a solid mount and a useful remote control, and it’s pretty cheap given its output. There is a lot to like here.

This is a pretty standard torch-style light, albeit a pretty bulky one at 286g. At the front there are two LEDs pushing out a maximum of 3,000 lumens. On the top there’s a single function button, and at the back there’s a USB-C port covered with a rubber door.

The whole light feels well made, with a full aluminium casing, and it’s IPX6 rated so should easily be able to withstand the vagaries of the UK weather.

The mount on the base is a Garmin quarter turn, and with a bulky light like this, it’s great to see a well machined aluminium mount for the bars. It’s a shame the plate on the light isn’t also metal though.

You could also put it on top of an out-front mount, but you can’t put it underneath: there’s no mounting point on top and the beam shape only works one way up. It’s a pity, and it’d be nice to see the option to mount it like that. Some people – those with aero bars – may not be able to find a place to put it.

Beam

The RAY 3000 has a high/dipped beam design. The dipped beam is quite sharply cut off at the top and sides, but it pumps out plenty of light and in 1,500 lumen High mode, with the cut-off pointed well up the road, you can ride more or less as fast as you like.

Add in the second spot beam and it really is like turning night into day. This is one powerful light. At no point on a fast ride through pitch dark lanes did I ever feel like I really needed the light on full gas, although it was certainly fun to have that much light.

The lens is well designed with a hood at the top to stop all the light going directly in your eyes, and there’s plenty of side visibility for town riding.

Most of the time I either used the Medium (750 lumen) dipped beam or the Low in hybrid mode (with both LEDs) that’s the same output. You can switch between high and dipped beams by double clicking the button, and cycle through them with a single press. There are flashing modes too, but they’re not in the cycle, so you don’t have to skip past them.

There’s a two-button remote included with the light. One button mimics the light’s button and you can use it to switch between high and dipped beams, and change modes. The other puts the light on full output when you press it and then returns you to the mode you were in when you press it again. This is useful when you suddenly need a load more light on a tricky descent, for example.

You can, in theory, manage the modes and add your own with the Magischine app, but I wouldn’t bother: it’s not a great app and the spread of the modes is pretty much spot-on anyway, so you won’t gain anything unless you’re keen to have an even lower power mode for super long run-times.

Talking of run-times, the RAY 3000 has a 10,000mAh internal battery (two big 21700 cells) and as a result the light lasts for ages.

Even the lowest beam (375 lumens, dipped) is enough to ride in total darkness at a decent clip, and in that mode the light will last almost a full day.

Putting out 750 lumens in either hybrid or dipped beam, you’ll be able to ride all night, and even on maximum boost you’ll get 3hrs before darkness descends.

On top of that, the light supports rapid charging of other devices from its USB-C port and because it’s such a big battery, that’s actually pretty useful.

Value

Currently (and frequently) available at £119.99, discounted from its £139.99 RRP, this is undoubtedly a lot of light for the money. It’s not perfect – it’ll be too bulky for some, and the limited mounting options will put off others – but I’ve really enjoyed using it and it manages to balance being enormously powerful with also having a beam shape and lower power modes that are very road-friendly.

It’s not a dissimilar offering to the Gaciron Raptor 3000 but overall I think it’s probably a better light, and it’s more powerful than lights like the Ravemen PR2400 whilst also being a fair bit cheaper.

If you don’t mind the bulk, and you have round bars it’ll fit to, this one is easy to recommend.
