Designed to ride the line between casual style and serious performance, the Fox Union Mid-Top Canvas Shoes rustle up plenty of traction and impact protection, while being surprisingly capable of fending off poor weather too. They’re not the best-vented shoes around though, and the stiffness of the soles might not be to everyone’s taste.

Fox Union Mid-Top Canvas Shoes – Technical details

These pretty much take the regular Union shoes and throw on a taller cuff. That means they get the Ultratac sole found throughout the range and the flat-lace keeper system – a bit of elastic that keeps laces from slapping about.

Enhanced protection is the name of the game here, as the raised cuff protects ankles against crank strikes, and a moulded toe cap provides rigidity when accidentally booting rocks.

Inside the shoe is an EVA midsole that’s said to ‘improve pedal grip and feel’, while an internal stiffening plate ensures an efficient power transfer when pedalling.

The Union Mid-Tops are available in UK sizes from four to 12, with half sizes ranging from 6.5 to 11.5. In EU numbers, that’s 37 up to 47 with half sizes from 41.5 to 45.5.

Fox Union Mid-Top Canvas Shoes – Performance

Building a shoe for riding and for casual wear is kind of odd, unless you don’t mind walking about in filthy kicks. That said, I wouldn’t mind wearing these to the pub if I never rode in them off-road, at least.

If you’ve got on well with other entries in Fox’s Union range, as I have, you’ll find the Mid-Tops are mighty consistent. In my (EU44) size the fit is excellent, and though the shaping is relatively narrow the toe box has just enough wiggle room. I’m a fan of the mid-top design, too. I haven’t found it restrictive, rather it adds another level of protection that hugs the ankle.

These weren’t perfect right away. At first the stiff upper would dig into the tops of my big toes when walking, but with time it softened, and the Union Mid-Tops became rather comfortable.

I wore these shoes solely for riding, where they excel. The Ultratac rubber is firm enough to stay resilient, yet soft enough for pedal pins to sink in. When rattling over choppy terrain I’ve stayed right in place, and never had issues with slips or creeping movement. The grip doesn’t leave your foot immovable, but at times I’ve been able to lift the pedal just by raising my foot, as the pins were still stuck in place.

With their molded stiffening plates these are surprisingly stiff, too, which won’t suit everyone. It can have a knock-on effect of reducing pedal feel, but how much feedback and detailed feel a rider wants is certainly a personal taste thing. I didn’t find these excessively stiff, and it’s something I’ve not minded.

Where I’ve been really impressed is in the shoe’s ability to fend off harsh weather. Granted, these are not waterproof, and I wouldn’t want to be smashing serious puddles in them, but they capably keep out spray and mud. I reckon these make excellent all-rounders, especially if you just want one pair of shoes for all of your riding.

However, they can get warm. During the winter, it’s appreciated, but when temperatures rise the airflow leaves much to be desired.

Fox Union Mid-Top Canvas Shoes – Verdict

While not exactly common, there are a few mid-top competitors around. Ride Concepts’ Vice Mid are pretty similar and cheaper too at £99.95, and while we’ve not tested them yet, the spec looks interesting – they feature a D3O insole that’s said to absorb impacts and reduce fatigue.

The regular-height Union Canvas is a bit closer to those Ride Concepts at £109.99, so if you’re not fussed about the taller cuffs you could save a little with Fox there.

Overall I’d say Fox’s Union Mid-Tops fit right in with the rest of the Union range, providing solid traction and good comfort – at least after a short break-in period – and their weather resistance is a very welcome surprise. Expect them to get a little toasty in warmer weather, however, and they may be a little stiff for some tastes.

These are grippy, secure and (once broken in) comfortable. They can get pretty warm and they’re on the stiffer side for this kind of shoe, but those won’t be negatives for everyone. Overall they’re very good.
