The modifications to the Experimental Traffic Regulation Order mean that disabled people will be able to cycle on the town centre street during market hours
“If we don’t hold a trial, we might miss the significant benefits it would bring,” said one cycling campaigner following the decision to lift a 30-year cycling ban, “strongly” opposed by 77 per cent of locals in a consultation
The street is part of the National Cycle Network, with cyclists claiming that riding on the street had been banned without first putting an alternative route in place
A consultation is currently being carried out concerning a proposed 18-month two-way cycling trial, after plans to implement it this year were kiboshed after opposition from outspoken councillors
A trial opening up the street to cyclists was expected to be approved last week, however amid pressure from local councillors the council opted to allow the public to give their views first
A cycling campaign group believes "many of the concerns raised will prove unfounded", with the current cycling ban ignored by those likely to cause pedestrians danger anyway and the layout allowing "space for all users to circulate in safety"
Some councillors have spoken out against the proposal, claiming they are "totally opposed" to allowing cycling on the pedestrianised route due to safety concerns
