TDG giving up on the climb.

I really don’t understand this race this year….what the hell is going on?

Would have been very difficult if not impossible for TDG  to win the satge with Formolo, McCarthy, Bilbao there. So I guess he decided to save his legs for tomorrow and helping Ewan in the sprint.

Formolo is going to be challenging for top5 this year. He is making up today what he will lose on Sunday.

Bilbao, Gallopin & Cattaneo gaining too.

Agreed. Gave far too much time away…which they may get back…but what they’ve  also done is lose control of the race to an extent and opened the door to an entirely new race. I fully expected them to contrive to push Ulissi into pink yesterday, if possible, and remain just a minute or so off the lead. Even TDG seemed somewhat puzzled by it all yesterday when he tried to get Jumbo to chase with him.

Nieve, Bilbao, Carthy, Plaza & Gallopin in the break

Surprised Bahrain are doing all the chasing, Jumbo Visma should be giving a hand.

    Just a heads up guys.

Apparently there is still an active protest (unresolved) re the TJ incident. My intension is to rescore all affected stages if classifications change.

The protest (but not the rescoring) may affect your team selection for stage 6.

I know of two teams that have protested, Atana & Quickstep.

If anything happens I suspect it will be after the race has finished.

That way, the organisers can have their All American Hero for the remainder of the race and then the UCI can impose the correct application of regulations once the immediate fuss is over.

PS. I hope this is the solution as I have already made my transfers for tomorrow.

Needs a brighter mind than mine to unpick how happy the big boys will be with today. I brought in TDG and played it safe with GC contenders to leave a few hanging around until the TT. Like the good Dr. I earned a resounding 7 points in the process! With 5 minutes plus advantage, today’s break could be filling the GC until the final week and some of them won’t give their positions up easily. The giro hasn’t thrown up a surprise winner for a while. Are we due one?

I’m beginning to think that JumboVisma haven’t done themselves a huge favour. Yes UAE will now ride to protect any immediate threat to GC.

But what about all the riders 7 or 8 minutes down? UAE won’t see them as a threat to their pink jersey but they could become a threat to GC later on.

It is a great time for riders like Sivakov, Geoghegan Hart, Zakarin, Landa, Cattaneo, Nieve, Kangert  to get in the break and move up GC.

Why is Sagan in the break?….what a strange day.

I have no idea why Sagan went in the break, he could have won that stage.

    Same with Philipsen.

Maybe they thought the race needed livening up a bit.

Windy day on the coast in California, 30mph winds from the west.

If there is any justice there will be echelons and TJ will get dropped.

It might actually be worth watching today.

I’m slightly better than you as I had Madouas.

Hopefully Battaglin & Ulissi can do something tomorrow.

Leaving some sprinters in was the way to go today, they might get another chance on Saturday.

Pity they don’t have live coverage on Eurosport there is a real battle to get in the break.

    How many transfers Minardi?

Six transfers taking my total used to 12

I’m only on 11. I haven’t liked the look of today and tomorrow for some time. Prepared to fall a bit and save the transfers for a better day. Oomen is interesting me in that breakaway. Oomen Ciccone could be the two KOM picks to get soon. Tomorrow will tell us if TDG is interested or not.

Hmmmm, I just realised I shouldn’t have brought the top GC riders in because the guaranteed points for GC just disappeared.

    Big mistake !!!

I was thinking Lopez is a guaranteed 7 for GC plus 5 for young rider, plus anything else he picks up is a bonus. He just lost all those’guaranteed’ points.

I hedged – ulissi and roglic if it came back together, Conti and masnada for the break. So I’m all behind the break now!

Good picks. You could be on for a stage win.

It was interesting to see Thomas De Gendt said he wasn’t trying for the break today as LottoSoudal think it could be a sprint finish.

From what I saw of the climb it is harder than it looks and I didn’t think sprinters would be able to make it. I hope I am right.

I don’t think tomorrow will be a day for the break.

The uphill finish is a good fit for a number of riders – Ulissi, Battaglin, Vuillermoz, Gallopin, Gasparotto, etc.

I’m not sure what to expect on Stage 8.

The 3km to go is near the bottom of a descent (I’m not even sure they have the 3km rule on *** stages) so it will be chaos leading up to the hill and on the descent. A good stage for a late attack maybe.
