Hip injury from lumbar arthritis

    Hi,

Wondering if anyone has any advice on an injury that has gone on from over 2 months. Getting a lot of hip pain, which started on a bike ride. Typically in a ride soreness in hip flexor / groin area after 30 minutes. Pain then switches to the glute, where it gets very painful and stops me. Next day pain on outside of hip, lack of movement, pain while sleeping etc.

MRI has shown hip is ok but some arthritis between L3-5 in lumbar, so recommended injections.

Anyone had this and done anything to help. I’ve tweaked the bike fit, stretching, lots of glute strengthening, rest etc. but no good.

Thinking possibly of just taking 3 months off as it is so depressing as cannot see a way forward.

    Cheers, Rob

Sorry you’re dealing with that. The fact that your hip MRI is clear but the pain moves from the groin to the glute and even affects you at night does sound like it could be referred pain from the lower back rather than the hip itself.
Before taking three months off completely, it might be worth seeing a physiotherapist who specializes in cyclists if you haven’t already. Sometimes a small change in movement patterns or a more targeted rehab program makes a bigger difference than simply resting. I hope you find the cause and get back on the bike soon.

The best thing you can honestly do in light of arthritis in the lumbar leading to persistent injury elsewhere in the kinetic chain is just book an appointment with a physiotherapist. My father lived with a similar problem for years before lumbar disc 5 imploded, I can assure you that’s a problem you don’t want; ultimately an appointment with an expert would be the best way to spend your time and money.
