I use gels for racing and sometimes for long training rides. They work for me on the bike but blimey I don’t half scare the cat later in the day.
Apart from stopping using has any one found a solution. I’m hoping there’s a easy half a banana, 2 almonds and Tizer remedy

Hi, I was sceptical but the Maurten gels are very easy to digest, took 5 over a 2 hour period and had no ill effects whatsoever, quite different to other brands.

    Flashback to standing at

Flashback to standing at Canary Wharf waiting for my older sister when she did the London Marathon. When I spotted her approaching, I held up a bag of Jelly Babies, soigneur/bidon styleee … then had to tell some bloke who tried grabbing them off me to bugger off and get his own 🙂

    The jelly babies even have
The jelly babies even have some protein in them, thanks to the gelatine.

    Can you have a liquorice

Can you have a liquorice allsort? Wouldn’t it just be a liquorice sort?

Do you like peanuts? I used

Do you like peanuts? I used to make raw peanut butter, raisin, and date energy bites for long rides. Pop them in the freezer and they’ll stay hard enough for two-three hour ride (unless it’s been as hot as it has been the past week).

Now admittedly all three of those ingredients are somewhat pushy in the bowel department, but I found that they didn’t upset my stomach in the same way as gels do. And to my taste buds, they tasted better too. Give a good concentrated hit of protein sugar and salt in a bite. Once you get the consistency right you can vary the ingredients, the peanut butter acts as the binding agent.

Malt loaf and fig rolls are another option (yet again though, can be a bit scouring in large quantities).

    Being pedantic (on Road CC?

Being pedantic (on Road CC? Never!) it was a liquorice allsort on that famous time trial.  You are right about the Jelly Babies though but fruit pastiles and most other kinds of jelly based sweets will do exactly the same job.  I never got on with gels because of the texture but I never met a jelly baby I didn’t like.

    Jelly Babies have broadly the
Jelly Babies have broadly the same sort of nutritional values as gels. They’re cheap, readily available and I’ve never encountered anyone have issues with ’em. And of course they were good enough for Beryl Burton.

    Veloforte gels and the chews

Veloforte gels and the chews are excellent. Totally natural ingredients and same amount of carbs in half the size of regular gels. Both very easy on the stomach. Well worth a try and I can give you a referral link for money off if you want one?

    When trying different brands

When trying different brands of nutrition, stay local and make it shortish, the time to find out that a particular bar or gel doesn’t agree with you is not 70 miles into a century sportive…

Hi 5 work for me, no issues. Could be worth trying different brands to see if there is one that suits you better.
