It may have missed some of you, but the Police and Crime bill (you know, the one where you get deproted to Australia for tutting in the presence of a statue of Churchill) has some implications for road and cyclists’ safety. An interesting analysis by Cycling UK is here:

Frankly, I love their suggestion of changing the definition of dangerous driving to driving that is ” so sub-standard that it would result in an immediate failure if committed during a driving test” – that just seems so sensible. If the driving test is the standard for safe driving on the day you get your licence, it should be the standard for the rest of your life.

    And instead of bollards, we

And instead of bollards, we can have cycle lanes segregated by a line of Churchill statues

    Very optimistic of you!

    Very optimistic of you!

What if you wanted to protest noisily about a cycle lane being removed?

    I shunned the ‘consultation’

I shunned the ‘consultation’ because the police have absolutely no intention of enforcing any regulations in connection with offences against cyclists.

    I filled in the consultation.

I filled in the consultation. It was a horrible mess of “Do you think the criminal penalty for trespass should be deportation to the territories for 10 years or 20 years?” Pretty much every outdoor forum I hang out on has been highlighting this since before the last election.

    well I might have mentioned

well I might have mentioned it a few times in the last week

and whilst Cycling UKs analysis is interesting, like I do wonder if as we recognise jurors were unwilling to convict on 14 year sentences what life terms will do in these cases, and their point on driving bans is especially noteworthy as I read just recently an instance where a driver who already had 9 points, received 6pts for speeding at 110mph, got a ban, but appealed it on exceptional hardship and somehow won, and is driving around now with 15pts

But the time to raise all these good points for consideration was in the consultation/review phase, we remember that right ? it was about 4 years ago IIRC, we all filled in the consulatation and made those points didnt we ? or maybe not.

So its not accurate IMO to say the government are rushing this bill through, and would they mind terribly if we rewrite their proposals for them, why werent Cycling UK making those proposals when they gave evidence in the review 6 years ago, why havent they been lobbying for those kind of things loudly from the start ?

    Thanks for the link.

    Thanks for the link.

I’m now considering getting my bike registered as a statue so any collisions would result in “defacing of a statue”.

Maybe a picture of Churchill on the back would count?
