Running this one up the flagpole to see who salutes…

I just don’t remember this being a thing until recently, now it seems a daily occurrence.
Could it be that there are drivers not up to the job, too many cars; should houses be made to ride in single file, shops put on high viz, why are we putting newer buildings in danger like this, it’s irresponsible.

‘A Dorset Police spokesperson said: “Dorset Police was called at 12.48pm on Thursday, August 13, to a report of a collision involving a car and a wall outside Iceland on Poole Road in Bournemouth.

“It is reported that the vehicle was also in collision with a pedestrian, but they did not require medical treatment.” ‘

    VW also has Front Assist,

VW also has Front Assist, with radar:

“The city emergency brake function is active in urban traffic at speeds up to 19 miles per hour. If you don’t brake enough Front Assist boosts the braking pressure to prevent a collision. And if you don’t brake at all Front Assist automatically steps in and does it for you.”

“FIREFIGHTERS are spending less time dealing with fires and more handling road accidents and rescue operations.”

I often wonder to myself what proportion of the blue light services’ time and resource is absorbed in clearing-up the daily mess left by road violence. It’s another cost of car culture, another that keeps a low profile.

“By contrast to the 2,218 fire calls – 461 fewer than the same period last year – there were 4,605 special service calls, which include road traffic collisions, lift releases and ambulance assistance, up eight per cent from 2020.”

Another day, another Audi in a single-vehicle incident.

This one felled a traffic light pole, damaged some control boxes and cables and ended up in the middle of Emstrey roundabout on the A5 dual carriageway near Shrewsbury at 5.40am on Saturday morning. Saw it as we drove past on Sunday.

To paraphrase our reactions – “It’s an Audi, what a surprise!” (with vanity number plate too, it seems)

Shortly after 11pm on Friday night a saloon car hit a wall at the Telford International Centre.

At 1.30am the previous Sunday morning (5 December) someone smashed their car into a garden wall in Buildwas, near Ironbridge. Fire service had to cut them out, four appliances were sent to the scene.

At 3pm today a car overturned outside outside Leighton Hospital in Crewe. Guess the brand of the car…

    Yes, IT WAS AN AUDI.

Also this afternoon – a driver careered off the road near a school in Walsall and ran over an 8 year old child who sustained potentially serious injuries. The Nissan Micra smashed through a garden wall.

If a car has had an impact at above say 3 mph, why doesn’t it automatically shut itself down for 5-10 minutes? It’s very clear that drivers can’t be relied on to stop any more.

In one way yes – we have things like ABS so you could speculate on a version of the “parking assist” tech that detected when collision with objects ahead was inevitable without braking and applied the brakes. Still a bit complicated. However… as we all know from tales here there are times when “for safety” you have to increase speed. Can’t recall seeing it written down but I’m sure someone will have some stories about “…and then I saw the lorry barrelling at me and if I hadn’t booted it…” or “we could see flames coming from the back of the tanker so we floored it and just avoided the blast”.

Less flippantly you could conjecture a need to e.g. drive someone to hospital following an accident. Or maybe the accident occured on the way there? But fundamentally the accellerator pedal is seen as just as vital as the brake so I doubt this one’s got (right) legs.

VW have something along those lines – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5NpXHxkrJc

Volkswagen’s Multi Collision Brake is a system that applies the brakes to prevent or mitigate a subsequent impact when a vehicle has been involved in a collision. If the airbag is fired in response to a primary collision, information is sent to the electronic stability control system to brake the vehicle. If the braking system is sufficiently intact to brake safely and effectively, the vehicle is automatically slowed down at a rate of 6ms-2 to a speed of 10km/h so that a secondary impact, for instance against another vehicle or roadside object, is avoided or at least less severe.

    BBC compilation: cars on

    BBC compilation: cars on bollards:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-59641534

    Solution? Remove the bollards.

To be fair I think the plan is to do camera enforcement instead and most of the vehicles in the compilation seemed to be going through slowly at least – it does look rather slim. But if they were needed in the first place…

Here we are – complete with some missing trim on Streetview.

    https://www.google.com/maps/@51.675597,-0.3793403,3a,75y,224.18h,77.18t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1se_MF_5Xp8MJlJ79EWZwlQQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Can’t really see why you have a problem nor why lots would need to go through there – though it is the closest access to the M1 I guess.

Bournemouth man jailed for stealing and crashing girlfriend’s car

‘A victim impact statement from the owner of the house, read by Ms Hart, said her anxiety has increased and she had to take time off work to deal with insurance.

She said: “Every time I hear pebbles or a car driving fast, I get uncomfortable and feel anxious.

“This is not something anyone should be made to feel where they should feel relaxed and safe.”’

It always seemed to work fine for Michael Knight.

I stand corrected! Just legislate that they have to have the series playing on the in car entertainment system in their KITT the whole time they’re driving…
