Hey,

I’m planning on combining the Ultegra 6800 groupset from my cracked frame carbon bike with an old Bianchi alu frame that I have. The Bianchi frame originally had a Campy Xenon groupset.

I’ve stalled at switching the bottom bracket:
I’ve removed the BB from the Bianchi, it’s threaded square taper single unit type.
I need to now go to a LBS to remove the Ultegra bb from the other bike as I haven’t got the right tools.

The question I need help with is; will I be able to fit the Ultegra BB on the Bianchi or will I need to buy a new one or find another solution?

If either bike was Italian

If either bike was Italian thread – unlikely, despite the provenance – both cups would be on a “normal” right-hand thread.  (On the British Standard, right-hand side is left-hand thread.) 

+1 on buying the Shimano-Type tool.

On another note, you could perhaps save yourself some money by buying the removal/fitting tool for the bottom bracket in the Viner rather than getting the LBS to do it. Regarding the tool, they generally fit the bottom bracket cup diameter that Shimano originally produced, and that SRAM (for example) still do produce. But then Shimano reduced the diameter of their BB cups, which means that with all these BB cups they sell, they include a plastic adaptor to fit in the tool so you can fit them. So depending on what shimano BB it is in your Viner, you may need the tool plus the plastic diameter adapter. You never know though, seeing as how this adaptor comes with all of this  type of BB that’s sold, the mechanics at your LBS might have one knocking about that they could give you in exchange for a packet of hobnobs.

I’ve just done a bit of

I’ve just done a bit of research on product info and on other forums. The Viner Mitus BB shell is a BSA English thread. Sometimes, Italian bike frames have, in contrast, Italian threaded BB shells. However, from the reading I’ve done, it seems that your Bianchi 2011 Via Nirone also has a BSA English thread BB shell. This means that you can use the BB from the Viner in the Bianchi.

Interestingly, if you want to be 100% certain that the Bianchi has an English thread BB, there is a way you can check via the information on the bottom bracket you’ve removed (assuming that it’s still readable and hasn’t been covered by rust). If it says “Use tool…” followed by a long number that ends in 36, it’s an Italian thread. If, by contrast, it has the number 1.37 on it, it’s english (it usually appears underneath the number 68, and before another number, eg 1.37 x 24)

That’s my understanding. If I’m mistaken I’m sure other posters will correct me!
