I have a road fork from around ’97. The dropouts are alloy, as is the threaded steerer, but the legs seem to have a curious carbon-patterned lacquer effect.
Was this just the cosmetic style of some alloy forks in the ‘90s?
Or could they be carbon?
I haven’t got the bike with me so can’t do the tap-sound test.
Any opinions greatly appreciated.

The metal dropouts on your

The metal dropouts on your forks look very similar in the way that they’re attached to the legs on mine. Maybe they are carbon after all. Thanks.

They do look like carbon

They do look like carbon after  market forks. I have a set on my Giant after a crash.

It’s not impossible that it’s

It’s not impossible that it’s made of shaped carbon tubes with metal dropouts, but it would have been extremely expensive at the time.  Trek OCLV and the Giant system only really became common(ish) about 1999…
