Tyre info please

    Hi All,
    This is my first post and i am a newbie to Road riding and bike fitness, Have got a Boardman 2014 comp hybrid with 700 x 28c tyres which are great just wondered is it ok to put slimmer tyres on the bike ie:25 for the spring/summer do i hacve to purchace new wheels or can i just change the tyres…. any help would be great

    You can change down to 25s
    You can change down to 25s and like everyone says – you won’t notice the difference, but … I would personally never ride the same weight in the winter as I do in summer. The punctures you suffer are endless.

    Stick some Gatorskins on for the winter (marvellous for durability, rideability and very, very few punctures) and then change to your slicker summer tyres and when summer comes you’ll be powering off like a madman having built your strength with the heavier rolling Gatorskins.

    Well, that’s the theory … and it seems to work well for me!!

    I would stick with 28’s, but
    I would stick with 28’s, but get better ones. Try schwalbe Durano or even Ultremo zx :O , both of which can be had cheaply in that size. It is however a hybrid, so don’t get carried away and buy out and out race rubber.

    I have the same bike, but ride 32mm marathon supremes due to the shittiness of the roads on my commute through Glasgow.

    If you run 25’s on the stock wheels, your arse, feet and hands will hate you.

    You’ll get a nicer roll out
    You’ll get a nicer roll out of 25’s, you should be fine to run them, on a hybrid i’m not sure any lower would be a good idea… not too sure.

    Your best bet on that will probs be 25’s, no lower, the bike becomes a little harder/twitchier to control if you go any skinnier and it’s only really recommended to drop lower than 25 if you’re road riding and more specifically racing.

    I run down to 20’s on my wheelset (though getting the tyres on and off is a right mare with my feeble ladyhands) and up to 28s in winter. On standard road wheels you can be pretty flexible. 🙂

    yes you can change the tyres
    yes you can change the tyres to a 25c, probably down to a 23c but I wouldnt bother. The width alone will make no difference that you will notice – it’s just 3-5mm after all. The quality & weight of the tyre is the important thing, a fatter lighter, more supple, higher quality tyre will roll and grip better than a narrow, heavy one.

    What tyres do you have at the moment?
