Etape Cymru – Climb and Elevation – anyone know?

    I’ve found it difficult to get the total climb for the Etape Cymru and can’t seem to get it from the Garmin plot either

    The distance they quote is frankly irrelevant without the cumulative climb –

    It would really help with getting my head ready for it.
    Coming from Dartmoor there’s nothing with a flat bit of road around here but it’s a big difference between a 6000ft and 10,000ft day

    Has anyone worked it out yet?

    Well I got the answer at last
    Well I got the answer at last – my 705 recorded 2843m of climb – a bit more than BLH so not sure why
    Having looked up the actual base to peak elevation it’ss the equivalent of almost four times up Snowdon – so well done to all and in excess of 9000ft on the day

    Superb event, excellent atmosphere, good riding company out there and just about the perfect weather – even made time to look at the scenery at some points

    Back for more next year

    Well my garmin 500 said today’s ride was 2411m of ascending.
    Really pushed myself and finished in 5:34:47, pooped now, but an awesome day 🙂

    I’ve compared map my run to
    I’ve compared map my run to sporttracks and bikeroutetoaster. Generally, map my run is 20-30% less than bikeroutetoaster and sporttracks is more (after applying elevation correction)

    I’ve always (across 4devices) found GPS tracks hugely overestimate.

    I use bikeroutetoaster as it’s in the middle -you could try that

    6500 is a good day out –
    6500 is a good day out – 10,000 is a ‘will be taking it easy the following two days’ for sure. . Perhaps we should ask Geraint to take a quick spin round it and give us a definitive answer. Seems the least he could do. Charting where the big climbs are should at least make pacing the last third possible.

    Sweet, always like to be quoted, maybe I am useful. ‘In 92 miles you climb a total of 6483ft and there’s even a timed section up Horseshoe Pass if you want to really test yourself.’ on Bike Radar, strange the Etape website is not very forthcoming on the elevation. 6483ft = 1976m so no consistency there.

    It’s amazing how there can be so many contrasting values!

    Ah well, I’m just going to have to pace it and push it in the last 30km if I’m still feeling fresh 🙂

    Thanks all – 9-10,000 feet looks like the place to get my head.

    Did the Dartmoor Classic this year into what seemed a permanent headwind and rain, which seemed to add another 1000 ft to the whole thing so fingers crossed for an Indian Summer in September

    My Garmin file from last year
    My Garmin file from last year reckons 2,438m..looking at the elevation profile there are steep climbs at around 35k, 80k and 105k and there’s quite a draggy climb at about 55k which ramps up a bit.
    File attached.
    It’s a good day out; I did it with a compact and running an 11-25 and there’s really nothing to get too worried about. I’d be doing again if I wasn’t in the Pyrenees the week before 😀
