Shimano 11sp crank compatibility with shimano 10sp GS

    Does anyone have any experience with using the new shimano 11 speed crank with the 10 speed groupset?

    I currently ride a compact ultegra 6750 crank and am consider making the switch to a double as I rarely use the 34t unless its a pretty steep hill. So I’m thinking its time to man up and make the switch 🙂

    I’m also thinking it’d be a good opportunity to drop some grams and upgrade to the new Dura Ace 9000 crank, but this is 11 speed (it might have to be the ultegra 11sp if I can’t find the DA discounted enough).

    I know Shimano’s bottom line is that the crank is not compatible, however I have read a few customer reviews on wiggle saying that they are running 11 speed crank with 10 speed group set without issues.

    I was wondering if anyone on here had any experience and can confirm the compatibility without dropping the chain on every downshift from large to small ring?

    As a follow on bonus question:

    I have a 11-25 cassette, if I make the jump to a double, what is the normal ratio people have on the back?
    Is there a website anyone can recommend that give the ratios for all the different chainring and cassette sizes?

    What you were told is correct
    What you were told is correct Sram and Shimano have different accentuation ratios so you can’t mix derailleurs and shifters. Cassettes, cranksets and chains are interchangeable though.

    What about a nice Rotor chainset?

    Thanks for the correction, but I knew what you meant 🙂

    The chain is 0.23mm narrower on the 9000 compared to the 7900 (I’m not a complete saddo, I found a website that stated the difference).
    Thanks for your comments, these are the things that are stopping me making the switch at them moment.

    I’m currently not 100% convinced that such a small difference is going to have any impact on the front shifting, I would have thought the narrower chain was to accommadate the additional sprocket on the back (gut feel). I am hoping that someone has tried the 11sp/10sp combo?
    I am not proposing to change to a 11sp chain or any other 9000 components, just the crank.

    The main thing that puts me off the DA 7900 is that pretty ugly (vain I know).

    Another option could be to go for the SRAM Red BB30, I am assuming this shouldn’t have compatibility shifting issues on the front? (I was told on here a while ago that the SRAM rear mech and Shimano shifts might not be compatible due to a different pull length)

    The 11sp chain is narrower,
    The 11sp chain is narrower, no? Even if you can make it work, I’d imagine the shifting would be imperfect. That would drive me mad! Are you not better off getting a 9800 double for (presumably) discounted money?
