Tour De France 100th logo Question?

    Just saw the 100th anniversary logo for the Tour De France, and am a bit perplexed by the fact the e has a gray overlay.
    I cant see any pictorial reason, is this some kind of french accent? Or just a mistake?

    Would love to know
