insurance & licencing for cyclists?

    Is it time for us cyclists to take out insurance for our own actions instead of relying on third party insurances that will not usually pay out. Having watched fellow cyclists flout normal rules, we are only a few moments away forum one of our forum being sued by a pedestrian/motorist for causing an accident. Also perhaps paying some moderate licence fee would also prevent the motoring lobby pointing out that we do not contribute to road maintenance like they have to?
    If we are treated equal then we can demand equal treatment all round!!

    All sorts of people flout rules, it’s human nature. However, drivers present a far greater risk to other road users than cyclists or pedestrians. Would pedestrians have to take out insurance too?

    Surely it would be better to target the many thousands of drivers (estimated at 4% of the total) who don’t have any insurance?

    I already pay Council Tax and
    I already pay Council Tax and Income Tax and pay the same utilty companies who dig up *my* road and then leave it to break into potholes forcing me to ride further into the road; so no-thanks to your licence.

    and yes I am a BC member, so I can get into the front of events, not to insure for other peoples bad driving.

    To be legal to drive a car in
    To be legal to drive a car in the UK, you only need 3rd party, fire and theft insurance. The cost of this is calculated on the statistical probability that you’ll crash into someone/something else and cause a fair bit of damage. In a car, that probability is high enough that everyone needs to pay for insurance. For bikes, the probability that you’ll kill someone is less than f*ck all, therefore insurance costs should reflect this.

    I took BC membership for that
    I took BC membership for that very reason, I commute through London and was worried about either actually damaging a car or being accused of it even if it wasn’t my fault and not having the means to defend myself against an insurance company. The option is there if you want it.

    Insurance is an option for many that have high end bikes.

    License fee? Wise up.

    As for a license fee being used on road maintenance, there is NO specific taxation that goes on the roads. So in a way, we ALL pay for the roads already.

    Also, do you see bike’s damaging road surfaces through normal use? NO, its the larger vehicle’s that do this.

    As said join bc or ctc for public liability insurance. My bike is insured for damage. I hold licences for a motor bike a car and trains. I’m also a member of AIM really don’t think I need a licence to ride my bike
