Damn crank removal tool – is this busted?

Hey, removing my crank arm today using an Ice Toolz Crank Removal Tool. It was a struggle which should have told me I was doing something wrong. I left the little silver metal cap on, which has now jammed in my crank as per the pic.

I think I know the answer to this (it’s busted!) but can someone look at this picture and let me know their thoughts? The silver cap is wedged solid. I’m assuming I should have removed it before attempting to use the tool. New crank for me?

Not a bad idea, I’ll give it a go later, thanks for the tip!

Try drilling into the cap and
Try drilling into the cap and using the hole to prize is off. A dremel or similar might be easier but a small bit on a power drill should work OK. Just don’t go too far. What have you got to lose?

    I’ll answer my own question
I’ll answer my own question and remind others not to make the same mistake as me – remove the silver cap when extracting the crank unless you have a splined crank. If only I’d have know that earlier! A belated thank you once again to Sheldon: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tooltips/cotterless.html
