Manchester Velocity £20m funding campaign

Our vision to transform cycling in Greater Manchester – help us make it happen

Greater Manchester has made a bid to secure £20 million of national investment, to be spent over two years, to make cycling safer and easier. If successful this will be the first phase of the ambitious Vélocity 2025 strategy which will see cycling in Greater Manchester transformed over the next 12 years.

It comes as part of the government’s Cycle City Ambition Grant (CCAG), which offers financial support for ambitious long-term plans for cycling in British cities and city regions.

Greater Manchester wants to kick-start a generational shift with a programme that has the potential to make cycling a part of everyday life and increase, by 2025, the number of people cycling by 300%.

If CCAG funds are awarded, they would unlock cycling investment for Vélocity 2025 worth £150 to £200 million from a range of public and private partners.

I have added my email to support, but all of this is pointless unless they start fixing the roads now. The roads will just be gravel in 12 years time and unrideable. They are bidding for a pot of money shared with other major cities, and if they do not get what they want, what happens then? There is not a drop of blue paint in Manchester yet. And looking at that map what happens to the bike lanes in between these superhighways?

Councils should have cycle lanes designed into every new/repaired main road project so that it is properly costed. Land needs to be taken back from wide pavements and grass verges for bike lanes (it is only 1 metre we need) and drains need to be sited under pavements/into curbs. We need practical change now, not grand visions in a never realized future.
