Benefits Of Wider Rims?

    I’m interested to know what benefits there are to wider (23 and 25mm) rims. Is it purely aerodynamics? Are there benefits for both clincher and tubular?

    Anybody with first hand experience?

    I’ve got 23mm Continental
    I’ve got 23mm Continental GP4000s on 23mm clincher rims, and i’m running them at 10-15psi lower pressure, giving a plusher ride than the 23mm tyres on 15-19mm rims.
    Aside from aero, that’s probably it.

    I don’t know of any better benefit than being able to run larger tyres with a little grip in the winter. 😀

    Regardless of any aerodynamic
    Regardless of any aerodynamic benefits, a wider rim can hold a tyre in such a way to give it a ‘better’ profile improving the ride and handling it offers.

    I have Velocity A23* rims, and coupled with 23mm tyres can vouch for how well they roll when compared to previous, narrower rims and the same tyres. Review of rims, with different spokes to mine here: http://road.cc/content/review/56954-strada-velocity-a23sapim-cx-ray-wheelset

    * As an aside, chatting to the wheel builders from Strada at Bespoked Bristol, they said that they’d stopped using A23s since production moved from Aus to the US due to quality control issues.
