Distal Radius Fracture

    Now 10 weeks post op, hideous fracture to distal radius and ulna. Really frustrated,itching to ride if only in the underground car park. Has anyone had a similiar experience and when did they start riding again? Patience wearing thin!

    Thanks guys, still have six weeks to go, but xrays on the 19th may get the Surgeon to reconsider. I had my grip strength tested a few weeks ago and there was a difference but hopefully this has improved somewhat since then. A turbo would be an ideal purchase and would help with my frustration. My radio-carpal space has been reduced and this will affect restoring full function of my wrist. I am continuing to do the excercises to improve my full function.

    I had a similar break from a skiing accident this last winter; needed internal fixing with a plate and had a three month recovery. I think I started riding a bike again about a month post surgery, maybe sooner. It depends how you feel. The brace your physio recommends for you should give you quite a bit of protection if you’re unlucky enough to come off while riding. However, getting a secure and comfortable grip on the bars can be tricky; perhaps ask the physio to assess grip strength? You also need to be able to carry your weight on the bars when stopping, and things may get a bit sore because of stuff like that.

    First rides were very gentle, and took place in the nearest park. Ironically, got hit by a dog second time out and nearly came off.

    What time line did your doc/physio give before going out? I had a hairline fracture in the elbow. Was barred from the bike for 12 weeks. Fortunately that was during all the crap weather at the begining of the year. Maybe you could set up the turbo and do light spinning without having to throw in intervals that’ll keep the legss loose

    My wife’s step dad has just
    My wife’s step dad has just broken radius and collarbone (whilst competing!). We set him up with our turbo trainer and now he is much happier knowing that he’ll still have some condition when he can get back on.

    He had a front wheel blow out at rapid speed in the sidewall …. not sure how … sounds quite unlucky! He was wearing a brand new Rudy Wingspan helmet on its first ride; it cracked in two but did it’s job. £145 well spent?!
