The balls of my feet at about the 40 mile mark go numb/hot.I have some new Sidi carbon shoes because i was advised the pain could be caused by local pressure flexable soles. It is limiting my rides.I just get going and have to stop and take my shoes off.I have rode for 20 years and this problem has only started in the last 5 years.

Try putting something between your toes. I used pieces of cotton balls and it worked. This was after trying different shoes, including Shimano with moldable insoles.

I was plagued with this when I rode with SPD’s – changed to SPD-SL’s and carbon-soled shoes and it’s been virtually eliminated.

My SPD shoes had BodyGeometry insoles in them, which did help for a while, but the larger contact area of the SL’s seemed to the the solution for me. My SL shoes are also a better fit so I don’t have to do them up so tight.

    Sidi insoles are notoriously
Sidi insoles are notoriously rubbish, and I had a similar problem with “hot-spots” on the balls of my feet. If you take the Sidi insoles out, you can see that they are incredibly thin and afford no cushioning or support. I replaced my Sidi insoles with adjustable ones from Orthosole (£28 on Amazon), and problem solved. They come with different density inserts for metatarsal and arch support, so you can taylor them to give as much support as you need (within reason).

    Seriously have you checked to
Seriously have you checked to see if you have one leg longer than the other ?

Most people do and it only happens later in life. Go and see a specialist and get your legs measured. If one is longer you can get an insert for your shoes / trainers etc which makes them both the same length. My left leg is about 1.5cm shorter and i have a specially made insole for my footwear to stop numbness and the hot foot syndrome.

    Socks maybe? Are your new
Socks maybe? Are your new shows narrower than your old ones, that may be the problem. If so change the insole, wear thinner socks. Loosen the tension in the shoe. That’s all I can think of.

F me you are on a 20 year bike ride? I rode for 14 hours once; more than the balls of my feet hurt! Sorry I have nothing intelligent to add! This sort of thing is frustrating; are we talking both feet equally and after 40 miles it just gets worse? What else eases it, other than taking your shoes off? Do the feet feel warm? Is it the same summer and winter?

    Hmm.

Did you change what kind of socks you use?

Maybe get some more expensive ones or summat.
