Carbon road bike on train for Lejog

    Hi

    In July I am cycling LEJOG. I will need to get the train down to Penzance from Reading with my carbon bike and was wondering on peoples thoughts on the safety of leaving it in the bike carriage?

    Will it be safe?

    Has anybody had any problems taking their bikes down on this train before?

    What advice would you give to me doing this?

    Thats a good tip about taking the air out the tires. I recently went from Taunton to Edinburgh and it kept moving from side to side on the crosscountry hangers. FWG shouldn’t have a problem in the guards van.

    My bike isn’t carbon but I think the amount of bouncing it did get, wouldn’t be good for carbon frame. Perhaps also put some pipe insulation around the gear hoods to reduce impact? Lock wise I used a d-lock with a cable extension and also small one to chain the back wheel to the carriage. If it goes in the guards cabin you probably wont have time to lock it up once its on, if its a hanger, you will have as much time as you want.

    Thanks for this guys, I think I may take air out of tyres and use a D-lock and cable to lock the bike to rack and the tyres together and it should be enough of a deterrent for thieves…they wont have long during stops.

    Yep, just lock it to the bike rack on the train as you would normally (or not).

    Let the air out the tyres so it doesn’t get bounced around, the guards van is a lot less ‘plush’ than your likely first class!

    This may not be relevant but
    This may not be relevant but I’ve taken a bike on a shorter journey on that route from Reading to London. I too was worried that someone might try to swipe my bike whilst I wasn’t looking.

    First, I’d ring First Great Western(?) for advice. Secondly, I think you can lock the bike up to the stand. There was a fairly standard bike rack on the train I travelled on.

    Take the front wheel off and carry it with you so that someone can’t ride off on it?

    I reckon you should be OK. Chances of someone targetting your bike and making off on it in the brief time it’s in the stations en route is hopefully remote.
