I have some Shimano 8 speed sti shifters and would like to use them with shimano lx/xt v brakes.I know i would normally have to use mtb v brake levers but is there a way to match the two with the correct ratio some sort of convertor from the after market? any ideas please.

    Hi Mick
    The STI’s have

    Hi Mick
The STI’s have generally more leverage ratio than standard MTB levers, (the brakes actuated by STI’s are much shorter in the leverage than the long v brakes also). I found they are more powerful (longer leverage at the STI AND v brake) but easier to regulate – more progressive and controlable if that makes sense. A little more travel for sure, but alround better, like Crossers have fitted.

Have also done it the other way, road brakes with MTB levers – now that wasn’t so good due to reduced lever lengths both ends. Really had to pull them. :O

    Hope this helps.

Hi Trikeman,so when you say they work is that in a fashion or do you mean they are just as powerful as when using mtb v brake levers?

    Hi Mick,
    have done this and

    Hi Mick,
have done this and the only ‘incompatability’ I found was the cables were different. The STI type (road) cables have different nipples (oo-err missus) to the XT type brake cables – as with the switch type triggers. I am not 100% sure on the ratios but they worked (and still do) well.
You will need at least the matching inner cables to suit the STI’s.
    Hope this helps.
