Another gears question

    My dad’s allez has 16 gears. Shimano 2300 drivetrain.

    Given his age he is thinking of changing from the 52/39 chainset to a compact. Other than new chainset does he need anything else?

    Will the front derailleur be ok?

    Hi SD,
    no problems for just a straight swap – just lower your front mech to suit and re-set and all will be fine. On some, a link or two less in the chain may be needed. This is one of the most popular jobs I do now as a lot of people are going compact.
