Groupset question/help

    Right i know at some point a while back i asked about fitting a larger rear cassette when i was getting a mate to come road cycling with me on the weekends.

    So i was doing up my winter bike so he could cope on the climbs.

    The climbs never came about because he was just enjoying some of the shorter ride’s i do. But all winter he’s been on a turbo trainer and getting his legs ready for some climbs.

    I’m still concerned about his ability and don’t want to put him off the first time we hit the lecht, soooooooo…..

    I know this is not the done thing and it goes against my better judgement, but i don’t have the money to be forking out on an old bike that i rarely get round to using.

    Could i fit this groupset, while still retaining the STI’s that are on the bike and get away with it?

    My STI’s are double and 8 speed, so i know that i’m not going to get the full range of gears, but i can adjust the derailleur to give him the biggest range for climbs?

    Unless anyone can point me in the direction of a sub £125 road groupset?

    I hardly ever ride with others, but thats how i started, on the back getting pulled along in others wheels. Thats why i dont mind doing it for others who come out with me, once i get the climbing sorted, hopefully he’ll be confident enough to take some turns on the front and by the end of the summer i’m hoping to get his climbing legs up to something which can keep a decent tempo for us to go up the hills around the same sort of speed

    Never gone up Kirkstone Pass but think im up for the task cause of gettin upgrades on my bike. Which is where I may be able to help you. Im going from a 9spd Sora setup to 10spd 105 groupset and Ksyrium wheels.

    I understand what you saying, but i’ve gotten him from a 12-15mph rider on the flat up to my speed.

    Its not a training partner i’m after, I just enjoy not riding on my own all the time. I’ve spent quite some time taking him out and getting him up to speed on easier rides.

    He has said that he wants to go further a field and do some of the harder routes that i ride. So he’s willing to come do some serious climbing. I just want to sort him out so even in the granny ring he’s at a level where he can keep going. I’m not going to go shooting off up a hill and watch him struggle up. As with on the flat, i’ll work him up gradually.

    So i guess your right in saying its a training partner, but i’m the one training him to a level where he’s comfortable riding with me. 😕

    He’s using my turbo at the moment along with my bike as i’m trying to get him out of being a “good weather” cyclist, this winter has not been so bad in terms of snow and cold weather, but he needs to harden up a bit 👿

    Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

    A double front probably will not work on a triple as the amount of travel of the mech will be different. A well set up front will shift between the two rings. A third ring may stretch the limits of the shifters ability to pull. More importantly the shifter will only have two index settings (plus the trim) rather than the three required.

    Similary for the rear, whilst the cassette width has not changed since 8spd the distance between cogs has narrowed. The shifter will be set up for gaps of the 8spd not 9spd cassette. You may get away with it but the small difference may well throw the shifting out mid range. Or simply cause the chain to rub and wear the jockey wheels faster.

    The decision you really need to make is do you want a training partner or a riding partner. Sounds like you have a good riding partner and therefore you should ride at his pace until he catches up. Rather than “forcing” him to ride at your higher pace.

    I might have an option for ya. Upgrading from a 9spd setup to 10 this week so will be geting rid of the 9spd parts.

    They will be reasonable. Parts will be a 50/34 compact double, bottom bracket, 9spd shifters, sora front and rear mech, 9spd 12/27 cassette, KMC chain & possibly wheels too

    Hope you can get something sorted out for him. I’ve still to find a regular cycling buddy. There’s a few of us but we only manage the rare ride out together due to our schedules.

    Yeah, but all that will end up happening if i dont sort something out for him to be able to spin up his own pace, is i’ll get to the top and be waiting, turn back and race down to find he’s on his way home because he couldn’t keep up, he can manage to hold my wheel at a steady 20 on the flat, so thats an improvement from having to go 10-15 mph so he could keep up.

    I’m just enjoying having a cycling partner for the first time in many years
